The Legal Adviser to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (known as Legal Adviser to the Foreign Office until 1968) is the chief legal adviser and the head of the Legal Directorate of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. The current Legal Adviser is Sally Langrish. History Until 1872, it was the practice of the Foreign Office to seek legal advice from the Law Officers of the Crown and from the Queen's Advocate General. That year, Sir Travers Twiss, the Queen's Advocate resigned, and the office lapsed. In 1876, Sir Julian Pauncefote was appointed an assistant under secretary to provide in-house legal advice to the Foreign Office, although he never held the title of Legal Adviser. In 1886, Edward Davidson was appointed Legal Assistant to the Foreign Office. The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) is a Departments of the Government of the United Kingdom, department of the Government of the United Kingdom. Equivalent to other countries' Ministry of Foreign Affairs, ministries of foreign affairs, it was created on 2 September 2020 through the merger of the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) and the Department for International Development (DFID). Francis Vallat
Sir Francis Aimé Vallat, (25 May 1912 – 6 April 2008) was a British international lawyer. Biography Vallat was educated at University College, University of Toronto and Gonville and Caius College, University of Cambridge, where he studied under Arnold McNair and took the LL.B. He was called to the bar by Gray's Inn in 1935. During World War II, Vallat served with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Upon being demobilized in 1945, he joined the Foreign Office as an assistant legal adviser. In 1960, he succeeded to Sir Gerald Fitzmaurice as Legal Adviser to the Foreign Office, serving in that position until 1968. Upon his retirement from the Foreign Office, Vallat joined the faculty of King's College London, retiring with the rank of professor in 1976. Michael Charles Wood
Sir Michael Charles Wood KCMG (born 5 February 1947) is a member of the International Law Commission. He was the principal Legal Adviser to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office between 1999 and 2006. During 35 years as a lawyer in the FCO, he attended many international conferences, including the United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea. He now practices as a barrister from chambers at 20 Essex Street, in London. Sir Franklin Delow Berman, (born 23 December 1939) is a British barrister and leading authority in international law. He was Legal Adviser to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office from 1991 to 1999. Background and education Berman was born in South Africa. Arthur Watts (barrister)
Sir Arthur Watts, KCMG, QC (14 November 1931 – 16 November 2007) was an international lawyer, diplomat and arbitrator. He was employed as a legal adviser at the Foreign Office between 1956 and 1991 being appointed the Chief Legal Adviser to the Foreign Office from 1987 to 1991. Arthur Watts was educated at Haileybury and the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst. He read Economics and Law at Downing College, Cambridge. Sir John Redvers Freeland (16 July 1927 – 29 June 2014) was a British diplomat and international lawyer. Early life Freeland was born on 16 July 1927 in Hendon, London to Clarence Redvers Freeland and Freda Freeland ( Walker). He was educated at Stowe School and at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge.
