Lee Chin-lung
Lee Chin-lung (; born 1947) is a Taiwanese horticulturalist who served as Minister of Agriculture from 2002 to 2006. Early life and education Born in Dongshan, Yilan, Lee earned a doctoral degree in horticulture from Leibniz University Hannover in Germany. Career Lee began work as a technician at the Council of Agriculture in 1979. The next year, he joined the faculty at National Chung Hsing University, and started teaching at National Taiwan University in 1985. Lee remained active at the Council of Agriculture, leading the department of farmers' services. In this position, he was responsible for introducing agritourism to the country. By 1992, Lee had been promoted to secretary-general of the Council of Agriculture. Five years later, a severe bout of foot-and-mouth disease hit hog farms across the country, and Lin was tabbed to head the newly established Animal and Plant Quarantine Bureau, a division of the Council of Agriculture. The Council of Agriculture (COA, ) is the official government body in the Republic of China (Taiwan) under the Executive Yuan in charged with overseeing affairs related to agriculture, forestry, fishery, animal husbandry and food affairs. The ministry was in charge for agriculture, forestry, industry and commerce in China. Black-faced Spoonbill
The black-faced spoonbill (''Platalea minor'') is a species of wading bird in the ibis and spoonbill family Threskiornithidae, found in eastern Asia. This species has the most restricted distribution of the six spoonbill species, and it is the only one regarded as endangered. Spoonbills are large water birds with dorso-ventrally flattened, spatulate bills. These birds use a tactile method of feeding, wading in the water and sweeping their beaks from side-to-side to detect prey. Confined to the coastal areas of eastern Asia, it seems that it was once common throughout its area of distribution. It currently breeds only on a few small rocky islands off the west coast of North Korea, with four wintering sites at Macau, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Vietnam, as well as other places where they have been observed in migration. H5N2
H5 N2 is a subtype of the species Influenzavirus A (avian influenza virus or bird flu virus). The subtype infects a wide variety of birds, including chickens, ducks, turkeys, falcons, and ostriches. Affected birds usually do not appear ill, and the disease is often mild as avian influenza viral subtypes go. Some variants of the subtype are much more pathogenic than others, and outbreaks of "high-path" H5N2 result in the culling of thousands of birds in poultry farms from time to time. It appears that people who work with birds can be infected by the virus, but suffer hardly any noticeable health effects. Even people exposed to the highly pathogenic H5N2 variety that killed ostrich chicks in South Africa only seem to have developed conjunctivitis, or a perhaps a mild respiratory illness. The red imported fire ant (''Solenopsis invicta''), also known as the fire ant or RIFA, is a species of ant native to South America. A member of the genus ''Fire ant, Solenopsis'' in the subfamily Myrmicinae, it was Species description, described by Swiss entomologist Felix Santschi as a variant of ''Solenopsis saevissima, S. saevissima'' in 1916. Typhoon Mindulle (2004)
Typhoon Mindulle, known as Typhoon Igme in the Philippines was a typhoon that struck the Philippines, Taiwan and China in 2004, and caused extensive damage in Philippines and Taiwan. Meteorological history The monsoon trough spawned a tropical depression on June 23 near Guam. It tracked westward, becoming a tropical storm that night and slowly strengthened as it continued westward due to vertical wind shear. When the shear abated, Mindulle quickly intensified, reaching typhoon strength on June 27 and peaking at on June 28. Land interaction with Luzon to its south weakened Mindulle, and the typhoon weakened as it turned northward. On July 1, Mindulle hit eastern Taiwan before accelerating to the northeast and becoming extratropical near South Korea on July 4. Impact Mindulle caused 56 deaths and property damage estimated around $833 million (in 2004 USD) in Philippines and Taiwan. Legislative Yuan
The Legislative Yuan is the unicameral legislature of the Republic of China (Taiwan) located in Taipei. The Legislative Yuan is composed of 113 members, who are directly elected for 4-year terms by people of the Taiwan Area through a parallel voting system. Originally located in Nanking, the Legislative Yuan, along with the National Assembly (electoral college) and the Control Yuan (upper house), formed the tricameral parliament under the original 1947 Constitution.
