Joan Leche
Joan Leche (c. 1450 – March 1530), benefactress, was the wife successively of Thomas Bodley, and of Thomas Bradbury, Lord Mayor of London in 1509. She founded a chantry in London, and a grammar school in Saffron Walden, Essex. Her great-grandson, Sir John Leveson (1555–1615), was instrumental in putting down the Essex rebellion of 8 February 1601, and her great-grandson William Leveson (d. 1621) acted as trustee for the original shareholders of the Globe Theatre. Family Joan Leche, born about 1450, was the daughter of Denis Leche of Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, and his wife Elizabeth, whose surname is unknown. She had three brothers whose names are known, Henry, Thomas and John. John entered the priesthood, and became vicar of Saffron Walden, Essex, from 1489 until his death on 8 November 1521. Paul Leche (July 19, 1857 – August 28, 1938) was a justice of the Louisiana Supreme Court from 1917 to 1919, and again from 1923 to 1925, the first time by appointment to fill the unexpired term of another justice, and the second time in a temporary seat to address an excessive case load. Sir Roger Leche (1361-1416) was a medieval British courtier, Member of Parliament, and Lord High Treasurer. Biography Early Leche was born into a well-to-do Derbyshire family and benefitted from being a Lancastrian supporter. He is a son of DAWKINS II LEECH. Offices After Henry Bolinbroke's return from exile in 1399, and subsequent coronation as King Henry IV, Leche started to acquire property and income from public offices such as Royal commissioner, Justice of the Peace, and High Sheriff of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire for 1400–01. He became a member of the King's household, spending time in 1403 securing Carmarthen Castle against the Welsh. He was knighted by 1404. In 1402 he represented Derbyshire in Parliament for the first time. He would represent the county again in 1406, 1413, and 1414.
