Lebanon At The Paralympics
Lebanon made its Paralympic Games début at the 2000 Summer Paralympics in Sydney, sending just two male representatives to compete in sprinting (T44 category). Hussein Ghandour was a non-starter in his race, while Mahmoud Habbal failed to complete his. Lebanon was absent from the 2004 Games, but returned in 2008, with a single competitor: Edward Maalouf, in cycling. Maalouf entered two events, and won bronze in each of them. The Paralympic Games or Paralympics, also known as the ''Games of the Paralympiad'', is a periodic series of international multisport events involving athletes with a range of physical disabilities, including impaired muscle power and impaired passive range of movement, limb deficiency, leg length difference, short stature, hypertonia, ataxia, athetosis, vision impairment and intellectual impairment. There are Winter and Summer Paralympic Games, which since the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea, are held almost immediately following the respective Olympic Games. 2000 Summer Paralympics
The 2000 Summer Paralympic Games or the XI Summer Paralympics were held in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, between 18 and 29 October. The Sydney Paralympics was last time that the Summer Paralympics which were organized by two different Organizing Committees. In this edition, a record 3,801 athletes from 120 National Paralympic Committees participated in 551 events in 18 sports and until the 2006 Commonwealth Games held in Melbourne,was the second largest sporting event ever held in Australia and the Southern Hemisphere. The 2008 Summer Paralympic Games (), the 13th Summer Paralympic Games, took place in Beijing, China from September 6 to 17, 2008. As with the 2008 Summer Olympics, equestrian events were held in Hong Kong and sailing events in Qingdao. Edward Maalouf
Edward Maalouf (born December 11, 1968, in Hadath, Beqaa Valley, Lebanon) is a Lebanese competitive handcyclist. He is the first and only person to have won medals for Lebanon at the Paralympic Games. In 1995 while at work, he fell from the sixth floor of a building in Beyrouth, and was left paraplegic.. Two years later, he began to train in disability sports. Major Results In 2006, he won the handcycle marathon in New York City. In 2007, he won a silver medal in the disability cycling world championships in Bordeaux. Later that same year, he won the European Handbike Circuit as well as the Beyrouth Handcycle Marathon. In 2008, Maalouf both won the International Handcycle Marathon. In the 2009, he competed at the International Handcycle Marathon where a striking event took place. International Paralympic Committee
The International Paralympic Committee (IPC; german: Internationales Paralympisches Komitee) is an international non-profit organisation and the global governing body for the Paralympic Movement. The IPC organizes the Paralympic Games and functions as the international federation for nine sports. Founded on 22 September 1989 in Düsseldorf, West Germany, its mission is to "enable Paralympic athletes to achieve sporting excellence and inspire and excite the world". Furthermore, the IPC wants to promote the Paralympic values and to create sport opportunities for all persons with a disability, from beginner to elite level. Winter Paralympics
The Winter Paralympic Games is an international multi-sport event where athletes with physical disabilities compete in snow and ice sports. The event includes athletes with mobility impairments, amputations, blindness, and cerebral palsy. The Winter Paralympic Games are held every four years directly following the Winter Olympic Games and (since 1992) hosted in the same city. Athletics at the 2000 Summer Paralympics comprised a total of 234 events, 165 for men and 69 for women. Athletes were classified according to the extent and type of their disability. * Classes 11-13: visually impaired athletes * Class 20: intellectually disabled athletes * Classes 32-38: athletes with cerebral palsy; classes 32 to 34 competed while in wheelchairs * Classes 42-46: amputees and those with other disabilities (''les autres'') * Classes 51-58: athletes with spinal cord disabilities; these classes competed while in wheelchairs Class numbers were preceded by a "T" for track events, an "F" for field events, and a "P" for the pentathlon. Cycling At The 2008 Summer Paralympics
Cycling at the 2008 Summer Paralympics consisted of 44 events in two main disciplines, track cycling and road cycling. Track cycling was held in Laoshan Velodrome on 7–10 September, and road cycling took place at the Changping Triathlon Venue on 12–14 September. Classification Cyclists are given a classification depending on the type and extent of their disability.
