The Leader of the United National Party is the highest position of the largest and oldest party in Sri Lanka. The leader is appointed by the majority vote of the working committee of the party who meets at Sirikotha, when the position is vacant. The United National Party (UNP) (Sinhala: එක්සත් ජාතික පක්ෂය, Eksath Jathika Pakshaya, Tamil: ஐக்கிய தேசியக் கட்சி, Aikkya Thesiya Katchi), is a political party in Sri Lanka. It was previously the main ruling party in the government of Sri Lanka. The party had seven leaders since 1947.Former Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe has been the leader since 1994. Ruwan Wijewardene is the current deputy leader of the party. United National Party
The United National Party, often abbreviated as UNP ( si, එක්සත් ජාතික පක්ෂය, translit=Eksath Jāthika Pakshaya, ta, ஐக்கிய தேசியக் கட்சி, translit=Aikkiya Tēciyak Kaṭci), is a centre-right political party in Sri Lanka. The UNP has served as the country's ruling party, or as part of its governing coalition, for 38 of the country's 74 years of independence, including the periods 19471956, 19651970, 19771994, 20012004 and 20152019. The party also controlled the executive presidency from its formation in 1978 until 1994. The UNP has been led by President Ranil Wickremesinghe since 1994. Sri Lanka is a semi-presidential representative democratic republic, whereby the President of Sri Lanka is both head of state and head of government, and it relies on a multi-party system. There have been fifteen prime ministers of Sri Lanka since the creation of the position in 1947, prior to the independence of Ceylon. The prime minister of Ceylon was the head of the government until 1972. In 1972, the country was renamed as the ''Free, Sovereign and Independent Republic of Sri Lanka,'' and the position was known as the prime minister of Sri Lanka from then onwards. The prime minister also held the unified Ministry of External Affairs and Defence until 1977, when J.R. Ranil Wickremesinghe ( si, රනිල් වික්රමසිංහ, ta, ரணில் விக்கிரமசிங்க; born 24 March 1949) is a Sri Lankan politician who is the current president of Sri Lanka since 21 July 2022. He also holds the position of Minister of Finance of Sri Lanka. He has been the leader of the United National Party since 1994.
