Esther Leach
Esther Leach (1809-November 1843) was an English stage actress and theatre director active in colonial India. She was an important figure in the theatre history of India, founded and managed the Sans Souci Theatre (1839-49), one of the first professional English theatres in the city of Calcutta, and regarded as the leading lady of the Calcutta stage in her time. James Leach (soldier)
James Edgar Leach Victoria Cross, VC (27 July 1892 – 15 August 1958) was a British Army officer and England, English recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth of Nations, Commonwealth forces. Leach was 22 years old, and a Second Lieutenant in the 2nd Battalion, The Manchester Regiment, in France during the World War I, First World War. The 2nd Manchesters formed part of 5th Infantry Division (United Kingdom), 5 Division, which had crossed the Béthune–La Bassée canal and then came under heavy attack. On 29 October 1914, near Festubert, the following deed took place for which Leach and Sergeant John Hogan (VC), John Hogan were awarded the VC. James Madison Leach (January 17, 1815 – June 1, 1891) was a United States House of Representatives, U.S. Representative from North Carolina. Leach was born on his family's homestead, "Lansdowne", in Randolph County, North Carolina, January 17, 1815. He attended the common schools and Caldwell Institute in Greensboro, North Carolina. He entered the US Military Academy in 1836, but resigned in 1838 and returned to North Carolina to study law. He was admitted to the bar in 1842. Henry Goddard Leach (July 3, 1880 – November 11, 1970) was an American Scandinavian studies scholar and civic leader. He is best known as President of The American-Scandinavian Foundation and Professor of Scandinavian Civilization at the University of Kansas. Biography Henry Goddard Leach was born in Philadelphia on July 3, 1880, to a family of English descent, the son of Dr. and Mrs. Alonzo L. Leach. He graduated from Princeton University in 1903, and then taught at Groton School for two years. One summer Leach accompanied the family of a pupil to Scandinavia as a tutor, during which he developed a lifelong fascination for the region. Brigadier-General Henry Edmund Burleigh Leach (18 July 1870 – 16 August 1936) was a British Army officer. Early life and career The son of Major-General Sir Edmund Leach of Corston House, Pembrokeshire, he was educated at Uppingham School and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, where he won the Sword of Honour. His brother, William, was a Royal Navy officer and first-class cricketer. He was commissioned into the Northumberland Fusiliers as a second lieutenant on 2 May 1891, and was promoted to lieutenant on 8 February 1893. He was adjutant of the 4th (Volunteer) Battalion Yorkshire Regiment from 1 May 1899. He was promoted to captain on 27 January 1900, and served with distinction as a Special Service Officer for Mounted Infantry in the Second Boer War in South Africa.
