Le Mans
Le Mans (, ) is a city in northwestern France on the Sarthe River where it meets the Huisne. Traditionally the capital of the province of Maine, it is now the capital of the Sarthe department and the seat of the Roman Catholic diocese of Le Mans. Le Mans is a part of the Pays de la Loire region. Its inhabitants are called ''Manceaux'' (male) and ''Mancelles'' (female). Since 1923, the city has hosted the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the world's oldest active endurance sports car race. A number of video games have been made of Le Mans 24 Hours. The race, the Circuit de la Sarthe, and competing cars have been featured in racing games such as the ''Gran Turismo'' series. History The first Le Mans video game was in 1976 by Atari, an upright standing arcade game with a steering wheel and white raster graphics on a black background. In 1982, Commodore released a LeMans game for the Commodore 64, which was actually a clone of a 1979 Sega game, Monaco GP. Next came the arcade game '' WEC Le Mans'', developed by Konami and released in 1986. For the following year, this arcade game was subsequently ported to the Amstrad CPC, Commodore 64, MSX, and ZX Spectrum by Ocean Software. The game broke down the race in four laps (two on daytime and two after sunset), divided as well into three checkpoints. Le Mans was an indie rock band from the Basque country, Spain, in existence between 1993 and 1998. Having previously toured and released records under the name Aventuras de Kirlian, the group took a new direction as they hired a new member, Gorka Ochoa, to play the drums. Together with La Buena Vida it was one of the main exponents of "Donosti Sound", a style similar to twee pop. In 2000 the Argentine band Suárez recorded the EP ''29:09:00'', consisting of 5 cover versions of ''Le Mans'' songs. Le Mans Football Club (; commonly referred to as Le Mans FC, formerly referred as Le Muc) is a French association football club based in Le Mans. The club was founded in 1985 as a result of a merger under the name Le Mans Union Club 72. In 2010, Le Mans changed its name to Le Mans FC to coincide with the re-modeling of the club, which includes moving into a new stadium, MMArena, which opened in January 2011. ''Le Mans'' is a 1971 film depicting a fictional 24 Hours of Le Mans auto race starring Steve McQueen and directed by Lee H. Katzin. The film began as a John Sturges project, before he was replaced during filming. It features actual footage captured during the 1970 race held the previous June. Plot Top flight Le Mans racing driver Michael Delaney spots former rival Piero Belgetti's widow Lisa buying flowers in the days before the race; he then drives to the scene of the accident which killed her husband the previous year. He has a flashback of Belgetti losing control of his Ferrari, forcing him to crash as well. Like many others, Lisa appears to feel Delaney was responsible, at least in part, for the accident. ''Le Mans 24 Hours'' is a video game released for the PlayStation, Game Boy Color, Dreamcast, PlayStation 2, and Microsoft Windows (in two versions of the latter, one developed by Eutechnyx, like with the PlayStation version and the second version being a port of the Melbourne House version ported by Torus Games). The Dreamcast version was ported and published by Sega in Japan on 15 March 2001, while the PlayStation 2 version was ported and published by the same company on 13 June. Based on the famous 24 hours of Le Mans race in France, the player is invited to race the entire 24-hour endurance course or take part in a simpler arcade mode. ''Le Mans 24'' is an arcade game by Sega produced in 1997 and is based on the Sega Model 3 Step 1.5 arcade system board. The game is based on the race of the same name with some of its cars from the 1996 race, including ones that appeared in '' Scud Race''. It was licensed by its organisers, Automobile Club de l'Ouest. Only GT1 and Group C cars make appearances in the game with the JWA Gulf Porsche 917 (a Group 5 racer, under the pre-1972 rule amendment) appearing as a bonus car which is an opponent fought at the end of the race, and can be played with a cheat code. ''WEC Le Mans'', known as in Japan, is a racing simulation video game released in arcades by Konami in 1986. It was the first racing video game to depict the 24 Hours of Le Mans World Endurance Championship (WEC). The Lap of Le Mans is split up into three sections, during which the time of day changes from day to dusk, dusk to night, and night to dawn. Gameplay The game attempted to realistically simulate car driving, with the car jumping up and down, turning back and forth, and spinning up to 180 degrees, with an emphasis on acceleration, braking, and gear shifting, along with the need for counter-steering to avoid spin-outs. ''LeMans'' is a single-player race game created by Atari, Inc. in 1976. It was distributed in Japan by Namco. It is the successor to the ''Gran Trak 10'' and ''Gran Track 20'' video games. The player controls the car using a steering wheel, accelerator and brake peddles and a four-position gear stick.
