Unlike the earlier work, ''Le livre noir du capitalismes primary goal is not to try to attribute a number of victims to the political system in question. Rather, the body of the book comprises a series of independent works from various writers who each voice their critique on various aspects of capitalism. Topics covered range from the African slave trade to globalization. An appendix provides an incomplete list of 20th-century death-tolls which editor Gilles Perrault attributes to the capitalist system.The list includes certain death-tolls covering the two World Wars. ''The Black Book of Communism: Crimes, Terror, Repression'' is a 1997 book by Stéphane Courtois, Andrzej Paczkowski, Nicolas Werth, Jean-Louis Margolin, and several other European academics documenting a history of political repression by communist states, including genocides, extrajudicial executions, deportations, and deaths in labor camps and artificially created famines. The book was originally published in France as ''Le Livre noir du communisme: Crimes, terreur, répression'' by Éditions Robert Laffont. In the United States, it was published by Harvard University Press, with a foreword by Martin Malia. The German edition, published by Piper Verlag, includes a chapter written by Joachim Gauck. The introduction was written by Courtois. Historian François Furet was originally slated to write the introduction, but he died before being able to do so. Jean Suret-Canale
Jean Suret-Canale (27 April 1921 – 23 June 2007) was a French historian of Africa, Marxist theoretician, political activist, and World War II French Resistance fighter. Suret-Canale was born to father Victor Suret-Canale (1883–1958), an engraver educated at École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs, and Thérèse Suret-Canale, a German painter educated first in Germany and then at the Académie Julian in Paris. As a student, he won scholarships to study in the colony of Dahomey (Benin) in 1938 and French Indochina in 1939. He returned to France, and was an underground member of the ''jeunesses communistes'' resistance from 1940 to 1944. During this time he met his wife, Georgette, a feminist journalist, novelist and poet. Marc Ferro (24 December 1924 – 21 April 2021) was a French historian. Life and career Ferro worked on early twentieth-century European history, specialising in the history of Russia and the USSR, as well as the history of cinema. His Ukrainian-Jewish mother was murdered during the Holocaust. He was Director of Studies in Social Sciences at the École des hautes études en sciences sociales. He was a co-director of the French review ''Annales'' and co-editor of the ''Journal of Contemporary History.'' He also directed and presented television documentaries on the rise of the Nazis, Lenin and the Russian revolution and on the representation of history in cinema. Ferro died from COVID-19 complications in Maisons-Laffitte in April 2021, at the age of 96. Socialisme International (SI) was a small French revolutionary socialist organisation, founded in 1985 and publishing its magazine until 2009. SI is based on the tradition of the British Socialist Workers Party (SWP) but is not formally a member of the International Socialist Tendency. Jean Ziegler (; born Hans Ziegler, 19 April 1934) is a Swiss former professor of sociology at the University of Geneva and the Sorbonne, Paris, and former vice-president of the Advisory Committee to the United Nations Human Rights Council.
