Lazar Behrmann
Lazar Jakovlevich Behrmann (, ; September 26, 1830 – April 27, 1893) was a Russian educator and editor. Biography Lazar Behrmann was born to a Jewish family in Friedrichstadt, Courland (today Jaunjelgava, Latvia) in 1830. He received his early education in the '' ḥeder'' and in the district school of his native town, where he began his vocation as private teacher. In 1854 he settled in Mitau, where in 1861 he opened a private school for Jewish boys. The Jewish community of Saint Petersburg invited him in 1864 to found its first Jewish school, which remained under his management until his death. From 1869 to 1882 he was instructor in the Jewish religion at the Kolomenskaya Women's College in Saint Petersburg. Jaunjelgava
Jaunjelgava ( german: link=no, Friedrichstadt) (literally:"New Jelgava") is a town on the left bank of the Daugava River in Aizkraukle Municipality, in the Selonia region of Latvia, about 80 km southeast of Riga. The population in 2020 was 1,762. History There is no evidence that territory of a modern Jaunjelgava had been inhabited before 15th century. However, a selonian Sērene hillfort existed from the modern town. A country estate Vecsērene manor was established around 1450 not far from modern town. During the 15th century the territory of the town was used as a place where merchants from Riga would transport their goods from boats to carriages because, due to the Daugava rapids, it was difficult to navigate further downstream. ''Ha-Melitz'' or ''HaMelitz'' (Hebrew: ) was the first Hebrew newspaper in the Russian Empire. It was founded by Alexander Zederbaum in Odessa in 1860. History ''Ha-Melitz'' first appeared as a weekly, and it began to appear daily in 1886. From 1871, it was published in Saint Petersburg. Publication was suspended several times for lack of support or by order of the authorities. In 1893, Leon Rabinowitz succeeded Zederbaum as the editor. ''Ha-Melitz'' was a representative of the progressive or ''haskalah'' movement, and even so severe a critic as Abraham Kovner admitted that it had been "more useful to the Jews than have the other Hebrew newspapers" (''Ḥeḳer Dabar,'' p. 52 ff., Warsaw, 1866). Courland Governorate
The Courland Governorate, also known as the Province of Courland, Governorate of Kurland (german: Kurländisches Gouvernement; russian: Курля́ндская губерния, translit=Kurljándskaja gubernija; lv, Kurzemes guberņa; lt, Kuršo gubernija; et, Kuramaa kubermang) and known from 1795 to 1796 as the Viceroyalty of Courland was one of the Baltic governorates of the Russian Empire, that is now part of the Republic of Latvia.
