Kiese Laymon
Kiese Laymon (born August 15, 1974, Jackson, Mississippi) is a Black southern writer from Jackson, Mississippi. He is a professor of English and Creative Writing at Rice University. He is the author of three full-length books: a novel, ''Long Division'' (2013), and two memoirs, ''How to Slowly Kill Yourself and Others in America'' (2013) and the award-winning '' Heavy: An American Memoir'' (2018). Laymon was awarded a "Genius Grant" from the MacArthur Fellows Program in 2022. Early life and education Laymon was born and raised in Mississippi. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree at Oberlin College, and his Master's in Fine Arts at Indiana University. Richard Carl Laymon (January 14, 1947 – February 14, 2001) was an American author of suspense and horror fiction, particularly within the splatterpunk subgenre. Life and career Laymon was born and raised outside of Chicago, Illinois, then lived in Tiburon, California, as a teen. He graduated from Redwood High School, then pursued a BA in English Literature from Willamette University in Oregon and an MA in English Literature from Loyola University in Los Angeles. His works include more than sixty short stories and more than thirty novels, a few of which were published under the pseudonym Richard Kelly. Twenty of his stories were published as part of the Fastback Mystery series—single short stories released in book form. Tracie Laymon is an American screenwriter, producer and film director. Laymon was raised in Houston, Texas, and studied film at the University of Texas at Austin. She began her film career with work in the Texas area, and several of her music videos and short films were recognized with film festival awards. She served in film production capacities in multiple movies, including ''Matchstick Men'' in 2003 and ''The Alamo (2004 film), The Alamo'' in 2004. Laymon moved to California in 2005, and continued film production work there, serving as production assistant on films ''The Ringer (2005 film), The Ringer'' in 2005 and ''Blades of Glory'' in 2007.
