Lawrence Rifles
The Lawrence Rifles were a volunteer Union militia company from Medford, Massachusetts that was formed during the American Civil War. It was created by Governor John A. Andrew on January 27, 1865 and was first made part of the 5th Massachusetts Militia Regiment as Company E, then became Company F. Attorney Benjamin Franklin Hayes was the original commander. Medford is a city northwest of downtown Boston on the Mystic River in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. At the time of the 2020 U.S. Census, Medford's population was 59,659. It is home to Tufts University, which has its campus along the Medford and Somerville border. History Indigenous history Native Americans inhabited the area that would become Medford for thousands of years prior to European colonization of the Americas. At the time of European contact and exploration, Medford was the winter home of the Naumkeag people, who farmed corn and created fishing weirs at multiple sites along the Mystic River. American Civil War
The American Civil War (April 12, 1861 – May 26, 1865; also known by other names) was a civil war in the United States. Sir John Alexander Macdonald (January 10 or 11, 1815 – June 6, 1891) was the first prime minister of Canada, serving from 1867 to 1873 and from 1878 to 1891. The dominant figure of Canadian Confederation, he had a political career that spanned almost half a century. Macdonald was born in Scotland; when he was a boy his family immigrated to Kingston in the Province of Upper Canada (today in eastern Ontario). 5th Massachusetts Militia Regiment
The 5th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Militia was a peacetime infantry regiment that was activated for federal service in the Union army for three separate tours during the American Civil War. In the years immediately preceding the war and during its first term of service, the regiment consisted primarily of companies from Essex County as well as Boston and Charlestown.Bowen, 148. Benjamin Franklin Hayes
Benjamin Franklin Hayes (July 3, 1836 – January 31, 1901) was an American judge, state representative, and state senator from Medford, Massachusetts. Biography Hayes was born in Berwick, Maine on July 3, 1836, to Frederick and Sarah (Hurd) Hayes, active Free Will Baptists. He attended the New Hampton School and then studied the law for a year with Wade & Eastman in Great Falls, New Hampshire in 1859-60 before entering the Harvard Law School. He was admitted to the Suffolk County, Massachusetts bar in 1861 while still in law school and then worked for Baker & Sullivan in Boston and lived in Medford. From 1862 to 1873 Hayes served as a Middlesex County trial justice. From 1864 to 1870 he served as assistant U.S. revenue assessor, and from 1868 to 1871 served on the Medford school board.
