Laurence Parsons, 1st Earl Of Rosse
Lawrence Harman Parsons, 1st Earl of Rosse (26 July 1749 – 20 April 1807), known as The Lord Oxmantown between 1792 and 1795 and as The Viscount Oxmantown between 1795 and 1806, was an Anglo-Irish peer and politician. Background Rosse was the second son of Sir Laurence Parsons, 3rd Baronet, of Birr Castle, County Offaly, by his wife Anne, daughter of Wentworth Harman. He inherited the County Longford estates of his uncle the Rev. Cutts Harman, with the proviso that he would adopt the Harman surname (thus becoming Laurence Harman Parsons). Political career He was a Member of the Irish House of Commons for County Longford from 1775 to 1792 and for County Longford from 1790 to 1792. In 1792 he was raised to the Peerage of Ireland as Baron of Oxmantown, in the County of Dublin, with remainder to his nephew Sir Lawrence Parsons, 5th Baronet. Lawrence Parsons, 2nd Earl Of Rosse
Lawrence Parsons, 2nd Earl of Rosse (21 May 1758 – 24 February 1841), known as Sir Lawrence Parsons, Bt, from 1791 to 1807, was an Irish peer. Parsons was the son of Sir William Parsons, 4th Baronet and Mary Clere. He succeeded his father in 1791 to the baronetcy and to Birr Castle, King's County (now known as County Offaly). Between 1782 and 1790, he represented Dublin University in the Irish House of Commons. Parsons sat then as Member of Parliament (MP) for King's County from 1791 until the Act of Union in 1801. In the following co-option, he chose to sit for King's County also in the British House of Commons, a seat he held until 1807. In the latter year, he succeeded his uncle as second Earl of Rosse and Lord Oxmantown. He also served as Governor of King's County from 1792 until the position was abolished in 1831. Lawrence Parsons, 4th Earl of Rosse, KP, FRS (17 November 1840 – 29 August 1908) was a member of the Irish peerage and an amateur astronomer. His name is often given as Laurence Parsons. Biography He was born at Birr Castle, Parsonstown, King's County, Ireland, the son and heir of the astronomer William Parsons, 3rd Earl of Rosse who built the "Leviathan of Parsonstown" telescope, largest of its day, and his wife, the Countess of Rosse (née Mary Field), an amateur astronomer and pioneering photographer. Lawrence succeeded his father in 1867 and was educated first at home by tutors, like John Purser, and after at Trinity College Dublin and Oxford University. He was the brother of Charles Algernon Parsons, inventor of the steam turbine. He served as the eighteenth Chancellor of Trinity College, Dublin between 1885 and 1908. Laurence Michael Harvey Parsons, 6th Earl of Rosse, KBE (28 September 1906 – 5 July 1979) was an Anglo-Irish peer. Early life and education Parsons was the son of William Edward Parsons, 5th Earl of Rosse, whom he succeeded in 1918, and Frances Lois Lister-Kaye, daughter of Sir Cecil Edmund Lister-Kaye, 4th Bt. and Lady Beatrice Adeline Pelham-Clinton. Lord Rosse was educated at Eton College and Christ Church, Oxford (B.A., 1929; M.A. 1931). Laurence Edmund Parsons was an eminent Anglican clergyman in the 20th century.He was born on 22 July 1883 and educated at Winchester, Christ Church and Cuddesdon. Ordained in 1908, he initially held curacies at St Bartholomew’s, Leeds. then Chaplain to the Bishop of Southwark before becoming a missionary in Shandong. Later he was Vicar of Chippenham then Dean of Cape Town. After this he was Director of the South African Church Institute then General Secretary of the SPCK until his retirement in 1954. Lieutenant-General Sir Lawrence Worthington Parsons (23 March 1850 – 20 August 1923) was a British Army officer who became General Officer Commanding 6th Division. Military career Parsons was brought up in Parsonstown in King's County, the only son of Lawrence Parsons. He was commissioned into the Royal Artillery as a lieutenant on 23 July 1870, then promoted to captain on 16 September 1880, to major on 1 July 1886, and to lieutenant-colonel on 1 October 1896.Hart′s list, 1903 He served in the Second Boer War and took part in the Battle of Colenso, the Battle of Spion Kop and the Relief of Ladysmith, following which he was promoted to substantive colonel on 23 April 1900. After returning to the United Kingdom, he was in January 1901 appointed Colonel on the Staff Commanding Royal Artillery at Salisbury Plains.
