Lawrence Model Lodging Houses
The Lawrence Model Lodging Houses are historic apartment houses located at 79, 89, 99 and 109 East Canton Street in the South End of Boston, Massachusetts. Built in 1874, these -story brick buildings were designed by Boston architects, Charles K. Kirby and William F. Goodwin. Three of the four have a traditional Second Empire mansard roof, while the fourth has a brick-faced attic level. They were built with funds from industrialist and financier Abbott Lawrence, who left a $50,000 bequest to provide housing for the poor. On September 22, 1983, they were added to the National Register of Historic Places. South End, Boston
The South End is a neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts. It is bordered by Back Bay, Chinatown, and Roxbury. It is distinguished from other neighborhoods by its Victorian style houses and the many parks in and around the area. The South End is the largest intact Victorian row house district in the country, as it is made up of over 300 acres. Eleven residential parks are contained within the South End. In 1973, the South End was listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Much of the South End was originally marshlands in Boston's South Bay. After being filled in, construction of the neighborhood began in 1849. It is home to many diverse groups, including immigrants, young families, and professionals, and it is very popular with the gay and lesbian community of Boston. Charles Kirk Kirby
Charles Kirk Kirby (Boston, 1826 – April 5, 1910), was an American architect who practiced in Massachusetts, Maine, and California. In the 1840s he began studying architecture in the office of early Worcester architect William Brown. Brown departed for Lowell in 1847, and Kirby was his successor. He and another of Brown's students, Phineas Ball (later of Boyden & Ball), formed a partnership, Kirby & Ball. They parted ways after only eight months, and Kirby left for Portland, Maine. Kirby is last documented in Portland in 1850, and in 1852 he came to Boston. His first major commission in Boston, the Boston Public Library, was won in competition in 1855. This building, an elaborate Italianate structure, was completed in 1858 and demolished in 1899. Abbott Lawrence (December 16, 1792, Groton, Massachusetts – August 18, 1855) was a prominent American businessman, politician, and philanthropist. He was among the group of industrialists that founded a settlement on the Merrimack River that would later be named for him, Lawrence, Massachusetts. Biography Born in Groton, Massachusetts, the son of American Revolutionary War officer Samuel Lawrence, Abbott Lawrence attended Groton Academy (now the Lawrence Academy at Groton). Upon his graduation in 1808, Lawrence became an apprentice to his brother, Amos, as chief clerk in his brother's firm. On the conclusion of his apprenticeship, in 1814, the Lawrences formed a partnership, specializing in imports from Britain and China, and later expanded their interests to textile manufacturing.
