Lawrence Crawford (mathematician)
Lawrence Crawford (sometimes written Laurence Crawford) FRSE LLD (1867–1951) was a Scottish-born mathematician. He was a co-founder of the re-established Royal Society of South Africa in 1908 and served as its President from 1936 to 1941. He was an expert on the Lame function, Mathieu function and proved Klein's theorem. Life He was born on 14 March 1867, the son of John Crawford of Glasgow. He was educated at the High School in Glasgow and then Glasgow University winning three separate bursaries due to his high skill level. He then won a place at King's College, Cambridge where he won the Glyn and Richards Prizes before graduating MA in 1890. He was then elected a Fellow of King's College where he then continued, doing research. In 1893 he moved to Birmingham to lecture in Mathematics at Mason College. In 1899 he moved to South Africa being offered a professorship in Pure Mathematics at the South African College, and in 1918 moved to the newly created University of Cape ...

Fellowship of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (FRSE) is an award granted to individuals that the Royal Society of Edinburgh, Scotland's national academy of science and letters, judged to be "eminently distinguished in their subject". This society received a royal charter in 1783, allowing for its expansion. Elections Around 50 new fellows are elected each year in March. there are around 1,650 Fellows, including 71 Honorary Fellows and 76 Corresponding Fellows. Edward Waring
Edward Waring (15 August 1798) was a British mathematician. He entered Magdalene College, Cambridge as a sizar and became Senior wrangler in 1757. He was elected a Fellow of Magdalene and in 1760 Lucasian Professor of Mathematics, holding the chair until his death. He made the assertion known as Waring's problem without proof in his writings ''Meditationes Algebraicae''. Waring was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1763 and awarded the Copley Medal in 1784. Early years Waring was the eldest son of John and Elizabeth Waring, a prosperous farming couple. John Sturgeon Mackay
John Sturgeon Mackay FRSE LLD (1843–1914) was a Scottish mathematician and academic author. Life He was born on 22 October 1843 at Auchencairn near Kirkcudbright the son of John Mackay and his wife Jessie Sturgeon. The family moved to Perth early in his life and he was educated at Perth Academy. He entered St Andrews University in 1859 and graduated MA in 1863. In 1863 he began teaching mathematics at Perth Academy. Although dallying with the idea of training as a minister he instead continued in mathematics, moving as a teacher to Edinburgh Academy in 1866. He initially rented rooms but by 1880 he was living at 85 Great King Street, a grand property in Edinburgh’s Second New Town. George Chrystal
George Chrystal FRSE FRS (8 March 1851 – 3 November 1911) was a Scottish mathematician. He is primarily know for his books on algebra and his studies of seiches (wave patterns in large inland bodies of water) which earned him a Gold Medal from the Royal Society of London that was confirmed shortly after his death. Life He was born in Old Meldrum on 8 March 1851, the son of Margaret (née Burr) and William Chrystal, a wealthy farmer and grain merchant. He was educated at Aberdeen Grammar School and the University of Aberdeen. In 1872, he moved to study under James Clerk Maxwell at Peterhouse, Cambridge. He graduated Second Wrangler in 1875, joint with William Burnside, and was elected a fellow of Corpus Christi. William Thomson, Lord Kelvin
William Thomson, 1st Baron Kelvin, (26 June 182417 December 1907) was a British mathematician, mathematical physicist and engineer born in Belfast. Professor of Natural Philosophy at the University of Glasgow for 53 years, he did important work in the mathematical analysis of electricity and formulation of the first and second laws of thermodynamics, and did much to unify the emerging discipline of physics in its contemporary form.
