Lawrence Cherney
Lawrence Cherney, CM (born May 1, 1946) is a Canadian oboist and the current Artistic Director of Soundstreams Canada. A proponent of new music in Canada, Cherney commissioned more than 30 new works for oboe during his career. He is a charter member of the National Arts Centre Orchestra and a founding member of the York Winds. Born in Peterborough, Ontario, Cherney is the brother of composer Brian Cherney. From 1959 to 1964 he studied at The Royal Conservatory of Music with Perry Bauman. In 1964 he matriculated to the University of Toronto where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy in 1969. During that time he continued to study music with Bauman. In 1966 he was awarded a grant from the Ford Foundation which enabled him to pursue music studies in the United States. Ray Still (March 12, 1920 – March 12, 2014) was an American classical oboist. He was the principal oboe of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra for 40 years, from 1953–1993. Early life He was born March 12, 1920 in Elwood, Indiana, and moved to Los Angeles as a teenager. He started studying the clarinet at 14, and volunteered as an usher at Los Angeles Philharmonic concerts, where he heard the Belgian oboist Henri de Busscher, whose “singing” style inspired him to switch to the oboe at 16. John Mack (musician)
John Mack (Sunday, October 30, 1927 – Sunday, July 23, 2006) was an American oboist. Born in Somerville, New Jersey, Mack attended the Juilliard School of Music, studying oboe with Harold Gomberg and Bruno Labate and then at the Curtis Institute of Music with Marcel Tabuteau, the longtime principal oboe of the Philadelphia Orchestra. His first professional experience was with the Sadler Wells Ballet's American tour in 1951-1952. Afterwards he was appointed principal oboist of the New Orleans Symphony, taught briefly at Louisiana State University, and then played with the National Symphony Orchestra from 1963-1965. He was also principal oboist at the Casals Festivals in Prades and Perpignan, France. Mack was appointed by George Szell as principal oboist of the Cleveland Orchestra in 1965, succeeding Marc Lifschey, and remained there playing under Szell and his successors Lorin Maazel and Christoph von Dohnanyi until 2001 when he retired.
