Lawn Bowls
Bowls, also known as lawn bowls or lawn bowling, is a sport in which the objective is to roll biased balls so that they stop close to a smaller ball called a "jack" or "kitty". It is played on a bowling green, which may be flat (for "flat-green bowls") or convex or uneven (for "crown green bowls"). It is normally played outdoors (although there are many indoor venues) and the outdoor surface is either natural grass, artificial turf or cotula (in New Zealand). History Bowls is a variant of the ''boules'' games (Italian ''Bocce''), which, in their general form, are of ancient or prehistoric origin. 1968 Summer Paralympics
The 1968 Summer Paralympics ( he, המשחקים הפאראלימפיים בקיץ 1968) were the third Paralympic Games to be held. Organised under the guidance of the International Stoke Mandeville Games Federation (ISMGF), they were known as the 17th International Stoke Mandeville Games at the time. The games were originally planned to be held alongside the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City, but in 1966, the Mexican government decided against it due to difficulties. The Israeli government offered to host the games in Tel Aviv, a suggestion that was accepted. The opening ceremony took place in the Hebrew University stadium at the Givat Ram campus in Jerusalem and the games took place in Ramat Gan, Tel Aviv District, at the Israel Sports Center for the Disabled. The closing ceremony took place in the Tel Aviv Trade Center. Therefore, these games were the first in Paralympic history to not be held concurrently with the Olympic Games. Daniel Erasmus is a South African athlete who won twelve medals at the Paralympic Games. At the 1964 Summer Paralympics in Tokyo, Japan, Erasmus competed in athletics and medalled in all four of his events, taking gold in the discus and shot put and silver in the club throw and javelin. At the 1968 games in Tel Aviv, Israel, he took part in five athletics events and medalled in four, taking gold in shot put and javelin and silver in club throw and discus. He also competed in lawn bowls that year, winning the singles event and taking second in pairs. Gwen Buck
Gwen Buck BEM (1929–13 February 2005) was a British Paralympic athlete who competed in several sporting disciplines. She won gold medals in table tennis, lawn bowls, and swimming, and entered several athletics events across four Paralympic Games. Personal life Gwen Buck was born in Richmond, Surrey (now London), in 1929. She was going over a level crossing on her bicycle in 1943 when she was struck by a lorry. The accident left her with a broken back and a severed spine, and she would remain in St Peter's Hospital in Chertsey for several years. On transfer to Stoke Mandeville Hospital in 1946 she met Ludwig Guttmann who helped Buck learn to become independent as a wheelchair user. While there she developed a love for competitive sport, in particular table tennis, and she soon began competing in the Stoke Mandeville Games. Rosalie Joyce Hixson (November 19, 1944 – February 3, 2006), later Rosalie Wiherin, was an American wheelchair athlete. She earned medals at the 1964, 1968, 1972, and 1976 Paralympic Games. Early life Rosalie Joyce Hixson was born in Crystal Spring, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Guy Newton Hixson and Junia May Duvall Hixson. Her family ran a farm, and she was on the track team in high school. She became paralyzed as a teenager, in 1959, from polio. She trained as an athlete at the Hiram G. Andrews Rehabilitation Center in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. She graduated from Southern Fulton High School in 1962, and attended Elizabethtown College. Career Hixson earned eight gold medals, four silver medals, and six bronze medals across four summer Paralympic Games, from 1964 to 1976. Marilyn Warren Woods
Marilyn Warren Woods (January 15, 1914 – June 12, 1998) was an American activist and community leader. In her fifties, she competed in field events at two Pan American Wheelchair Games (1967 and 1969), and in the 1968 Summer Paralympics. Early life Marilyn Lois Warren was born in Hudson, New Hampshire, the daughter of Oscar G. Warren and Ida Proctor Warren. She survived polio in infancy, was treated at Children's Hospital in Boston, MA. She spent months in casts from the nap of her neck to her toes, but did learn to walk (with crutches and braces on both legs) at the same age as other children. She spent much of her childhood in an orphanage in Nashua, New Hampshire. She graduated from Nashua High School and Nashua Business College. She used a wheelchair, leg braces, and arm crutches, and drove an adapted car.
