Law enforcement in Bangladesh is one part of the Justice System in Bangladesh along with Prisons and Courts. Bangladesh Police Academy (BPA) is a 100-year-old police training institute. It is the Alma Mater of police training in Bangladesh. It is located 20 miles from Rajshahi City. Rapid Action Battalion or RAB, is an anti-crime and anti-terrorism unit of the Bangladesh Police. This elite force consists of members of the Bangladesh Army, Bangladesh Police, Bangladesh Navy, Bangladesh Air Force, Border Guard Bangladesh, Bangladesh Civil Service and Bangladesh Ansar. The Bangladesh Ansar (also known as the Ansar Bahini) is a paramilitary auxiliary force responsible for the preservation of internal security and law enforcement in Bangladesh. The Village Defence Party (VDPs) is a law enforcement force in Bangladesh, organised in distinct units at the level of individual villages and urban towns. Gram Police Bahini () is a Bangladeshi specialized police unit responsible for security in rural area and providing support to Bangladesh Police. History In rural areas of Medieval Bengal the villages were guarded by chaukiders who would become Gram Police Bahini. In the 1880s law and order deteriorated in the region and the Chaukideri Act 1870 was amended through the 1892 Act 1 by the British Raj. There are 10 personnel of Gram Police Bahini in each of the 4,562 Unions, the smallest administrative and local government units in Bangladesh.
