Lavern Roach
Raymond "Lavern" Roach (February 22, 1925 – February 23, 1950) was a boxer from the small Texas town of Plainview, who was Ring Magazine's Rookie-of-the-Year in 1947. Lavern had a winning record and was considered an up-and-coming contender until his untimely death. Lavern sustained a fatal head injury during a boxing match and died the next day due to a subdural hemorrhage. He was the first boxing casualty of 1950. In Roman mythology, Laverna was a goddess of thieves, cheats and the underworld. She was propitiated by libations poured with the left hand. The poet Horace and the playwright Plautus call her a goddess of thieves. In Rome, her sanctuary was near the Porta Lavernalis. LaVern Baker
Delores LaVern Baker (November 11, 1929 – March 10, 1997) was an American R&B singer who had several hit records on the pop chart in the 1950s and early 1960s. Her most successful records were "Tweedle Dee" (1955), " Jim Dandy" (1956), and "I Cried a Tear" (1958). Baker was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1991. The Hall remarked that her "fiery fusion of blues, jazz and R&B showcased her alluring vocals and set the stage for the rock and roll surge of the Fifties". Lavern Ahlstrom is a retired provincial level politician and former leader of the Alberta Social Credit Party. Political career Ahlstrom first became involved with Social Credit in the 1970s. He has been a perennial candidate for the party with some moderately successful showings during his career. Ahlstrom first ran for office in electoral district of Rocky Mountain House in the 1979 Alberta general election finishing second to Progressive Conservative Jack Campbell. He ran for a second time in the 1986 Alberta general election, this time for the Representative Party of Alberta finishing third. In that election he was once again defeated by Campbell. He would run again in the 1993 Alberta general election once again for Social Credit finishing a strong second to Progressive Conservative Ty Lund. Edward Lavern "Eddie" Johnstone (born March 2, 1954) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player. He played for the Michigan Stags/Baltimore Blades in the World Hockey Association (WHA), followed by parts of ten seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) with the New York Rangers and Detroit Red Wings. Johnstone was born in Brandon, Manitoba, but grew up in Vernon, British Columbia. Playing career Johnstone played major junior with the Medicine Hat Tigers of the Western Canada Hockey League from 1971 to 1974. After two consecutive 100 point seasons with Medicine Hat, Johnstone was drafted 104th overall by the New York Rangers in the 1974 NHL amateur draft, and 78th overall by the Michigan Stags in the 1974 WHA Amateur Draft. LaVern Ralph "Lavvie" Dilweg (November 1, 1903 – January 2, 1968) was a professional football player, attorney, and U.S. Congressman from Wisconsin. Football Born and raised in Milwaukee, Dilweg attended its public schools and graduated from Washington High School. He enrolled at Marquette University in Milwaukee and played college football for the Golden Avalanche under head coach Frank Murray. A three-sport college athlete, he played center on the basketball team and was a shot putter on the track team. Dilweg was an All-American end, and played in the first East–West Shrine Game in San Francisco in late 1925. The Golden Avalanche had a record of 28–4–1 during Dilweg's four years. Lavern Corbin (died June 10, 1965) was an American basketball player who was an NCAA All-American as a senior at Cal in 1929. A center, Corbin played three seasons of college basketball between 1926–27 and 1928–29. Cal won conference titles every one of those years, and he twice led the league in scoring. He was an All-Pacific Coast Conference selection in 1929. In high school, Corbin was a heralded player at Piedmont High School in Piedmont, California. LaVern Earl "Torgy" Torgeson (February 28, 1929 – March 20, 2015) was an American football player and coach. He played college football for Washington State from 1948 through 1950. Torgeson played professionally in the National Football League (NFL) for seven seasons, principally as a linebacker, for the Detroit Lions from 1951 to 1954 and for the Washington Redskins from 1955 to 1957. After retiring as a player, Torgeson worked for 35 years from 1959 to 1993 as an assistant coach in the NFL. His coaching positions included stints with the Washington Redskins (1959–1961, 1971–1977, 1981–1993), Pittsburgh Steelers (1962–1968), and Los Angeles Rams (1969–1970, 1978–1980).
