Green laver (), known as ''aonori'' (; ) in Japan, ''sea cabbage'' () or ''hutai'' () in China, and ''parae'' () in Korean, is a type of edible green seaweed, including species from the genera ''Monostroma'' and ''Ulva'' ('' Ulva prolifera'', '' Ulva pertusa'', ''Ulva intestinalis''). It is commercially cultivated in some bay areas in Japan, Korea, and Taiwan, such as Ise Bay. It is rich in minerals such as calcium, magnesium, lithium, vitamins, and amino acids such as methionine. It is also called ''aosa'' (アオサ, ''Ulva pertusa'') in some places in Japan. Similar edible seaweeds, with indigenous names translated as "laver", are found in many other countries around the world. River Laver
The River Laver is a tributary of the River Skell, itself a tributary of the River Ure in North Yorkshire, England. The name is of Brittonic languages, Brittonic origin, from ''labaro'', meaning "talkative", i.e. a babbling brook. The Afon Llafar in Wales shares the same name. The Laver is noted as a fly fishing river, especially for brown trout and Thymallus thymallus, grayling. Course The river has its origins in a number of small streams which rise on the moors between upper Nidderdale and Kirkby Malzeard. The two largest of these streams, North Gill Beck and South Gill Beck, meet in a narrow wooded valley at Dallowgill to form the River Laver. The river continues to flow through a narrow wooded valley, before broadening at Laverton, North Yorkshire, Laverton. The riverbanks again become densely wooded near Winksley, then become more open and shallow as the river approaches Ripon. The river joins the River Skell at the western edge of Ripon. Lavatorium
A lavatorium (plural ''lavatoria''), also anglicisation, anglicised as laver and lavatory, was the communal washing area in a monastery, particularly in medieval abbeys and cathedral cloisters. Monks were required to wash before meals; thus the lavatorium was typically adjacent to the refectory. Description All monastic orders required handwashing before meals. A lavatorium was therefore provided near the refectory, either against one wall of the cloister with a long trench basin, or as a free-standing building with a circular or octagonal basin in the centre. An example of the first type, dating to the 14th century, survives at Gloucester Cathedral, and has a towel cupboard nearby. At Durham Cathedral, the lavatorium was a square building with a circular basin which was replaced in 1432–33 with one of marble. Ritual Purification
Ritual purification is the ritual prescribed by a religion by which a person is considered to be free of ''uncleanliness'', especially prior to the worship of a deity, and ritual purity is a state of ritual cleanliness. Ritual purification may also apply to objects and places. Ritual uncleanliness is not identical with ordinary physical impurity, such as dirt stains; nevertheless, body fluids are generally considered ritually unclean. Most of these rituals existed long before the germ theory of disease, and figure prominently from the earliest known religious systems of the Ancient Near East. Some writers connect the rituals to taboos. Some have seen benefits of these practices as a point of health and preventing infections especially in areas where humans come in close contact with each other.
