Laval Daycare Bus Crash
On February 8, 2023, a bus driver crashed a Société de transport de Laval (STL) bus into a daycare in the Sainte-Rose district of Laval, Quebec, Canada, killing two children and hospitalizing six others. The driver exited the bus immediately after the crash, screaming hysterically and tearing off his clothes. He was immediately subdued by parents and residents and arrested by police minutes after the crash. Police secured the scene and children were moved to another school, where police and teachers calmed the children and reunited them with their panicked parents. A spontaneous memorial of teddy bears and flowers appeared just outside the crash scene by evening. Trauma experts were on hand to support residents and parents. The next day, Premier of Quebec Francois Legault paid his respects at the scene, and Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau attended a memorial service at the Sainte-Rose-de-Lima Church the following day. Sainte-Rose, Quebec
Sainte-Rose is a district in Laval, Quebec. It was incorporated as a village in 1850, and was a separate town until the municipal mergers on August 6, 1965 which amalgamated all the municipalities on Île Jésus into a single City of Laval. Ste-Rose is best known for the parish church, erected 1740, which contains a Casavant Frères organ and hosts numerous concerts every year, and for "Vieux Ste-Rose", an area known for its old houses and its restaurants. Other districts that are also part of Sainte-Rose are Champenois (located between Boulevard Curé-Labelle and Autoroute 15, to the west of "Vieux Ste-Rose") and Champfleury, also known as Des Oiseaux (after the name of the district's main thoroughfare), to the south, near the border with Chomedey. François Legault
François Legault (; born May 26, 1957) is a Canadian politician serving as the 32nd premier of Quebec since 2018. A member of the Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ), he has led the party since its founding in 2011. Legault sits as a member of the National Assembly (MNA) for the Lanaudière region riding of L'Assomption. Prior to entering politics, he was the co-founder of the Canadian airline Air Transat. Stéphane Boyer
Stéphane Boyer (born c. 1988) is a Canadian politician. He was elected as mayor of Laval, Quebec in the 2021 mayoral election, succeeding Marc Demers. Elected at the age of 33, he is the youngest mayor in the history of the city. Biography Boyer grew up in the Pont-Viau neighbourhood of Laval. He is a graduate of a political communications program at Université du Québec à Montréal. Before being elected as mayor, Boyer was a city councillor representing District 4 ( Duvernay– Pont-Viau) on Laval City Council. He was first elected to council in the 2013 municipal elections and was re-elected in 2017. As a city councillor, he was involved in a number of local issues, including the upgrading of the entrance of the Viau Bridge. He then took on more responsibility as part of the city's executive council, eventually becoming the committee's vice president. He became leader of the Mouvement lavallois party in April 2021. The Centre hospitalier universitaire Sainte-Justine (CHU Sainte-Justine) is the largest mother and child centre in Canada and one of the four most important pediatric centres in North America. It is affiliated with the Université de Montréal, located in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Founded in 1907 by Justine Lacoste-Beaubien and Dr Irma LeVasseur, Irma Levasseur, the CHU Sainte-Justine is currently the largest pediatric health centre in Canada. With its 550 beds, of which 30 are in the intensive care unit, it receives 19,000 inpatients yearly. The centre employs 520 doctors and 4500 medical students and residents.
