Laval-sur-le-Lac is a small sector on the western part of Laval and was a separate city until the municipal mergers on August 6, 1965. This community contains North America's oldest French speaking private golf club, Le Club Laval-sur-le-Lac, established in 1917. The seasonal Laval-sur-le-Lac–Île-Bizard Ferry, which does not operate in winter, connects Laval-sur-le-Lac with Île Bizard. Geography It is bordered by Laval-Ouest, Sainte-Dorothée to the east and the Rivière des Prairies (Lake of Two Mountains) to the west. Laval (; ) is a city in Quebec, Canada. It is in the southwest of the province, north of Montreal. It is the largest suburb of Montreal, the third-largest city in the province after Montreal and Quebec City, and the thirteenth largest city in Canada with a population of 422,993 in 2016. The Laval-sur-le-Lac–Île-Bizard Ferry is a seasonal reaction ferry, crossing the city limits of Montreal in the Canadian province of Quebec. It carries cars, bicycles and pedestrians across the Rivière des Prairies from Laval-sur-le-Lac to Île Bizard. Île Bizard is an island near the Island of Montreal in the Hochelaga Archipelago region. History Historically named Île Bonaventure, by 1723 it had come to be named Île Bizard, after Jacques Bizard, to whom it was conceded as a fief in 1678, part of the seigneurial system of New France. The island was also used by the settlers of New France, as a way to get timber into Montreal from the river using timber rafting. Modern It was formerly a separate municipality named St Raphael de L'Île-Bizard, but was forcefully merged with of the city of Montreal, and made into the borough of L'Île-Bizard–Sainte-Geneviève. Laval-Ouest is a district in Laval, Quebec. It was a separate city until the municipal mergers on August 6, 1965. Geography Laval-Ouest is delimited north and north-west by the Rivière des Mille-Îles, south-west by Laval-sur-le-Lac, east by Fabreville and south by Sainte-Dorothée. Also known as Plage Laval. Sainte-Dorothée is a district in Laval, Quebec. It was a separate city until the municipal mergers on August 6, 1965. The Sainte-Dorothée that was known for forest and farmlands is no longer what it used to be. It took a giant transformation during the last decade with the arrival of SmartCentre (formerly Mega Centre) Sainte-Dorothée and Mega Centre Notre-Dame. It began with the construction of Canadian Tire, IGA & followed with the first Wal-Mart Canada in the western Laval area. The expansion has never stopped since. It now has almost every major department store, restaurant, hundreds of boutiques and two locations open 24 hours. The Rivière des Prairies (; ), called the Back River in English, is a delta channel of the Ottawa River in southwestern Quebec, Canada. Chomedey is a district in the southwest of the city of Laval and was a separate municipality until the municipal mergers in 1965. History On April 1, 1961, the towns of and and the city of Saint-Martin were merged, giving birth to the city of Chomedey. Chomedey's city hall became the city hall for all of Laval. The merger project was first launched by the administration of the city of L'Abord à Plouffe.
