Laurent Leksell
Laurent Leksell (born in 1952) is a Swedish PhD Economics, international business leader and entrepreneur. With his father, Lars, Laurent Leksell jointly founded Elekta AB in 1972, while he was still a student of the Stockholm School of Economics to exploit the Gamma Knife his father had invented. Elekta is a Swedish med-tech enterprise specialised in the treatment of cancer and neurosurgical conditions. Laurent Leksell held the role of CEO of Elekta between 1972 and 2005. Lars Leksell
Lars Leksell (1907–1986) was a Swedish physician and Professor of Neurosurgery at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden. He was the inventor of radiosurgery. Life and career Lars Leksell was born in Fässberg Parish, Sweden on November 24, 1907. He completed medical studies at the Karolinska Institute and began his neurosurgical training in 1935 under Herbert Olivecrona. Development of electronystagmography and his thesis on muscular control and gamma motor neurons were his early scientific achievements. In 1949, he developed his arc centered stereotactic frame based on A polar coordinate system. In 1951, using the Uppsala University cyclotron, Leksell and the physicist and radiobiologist Borje Larsson, developed the concept of radiosurgery. Radiosurgery is surgery using radiation, that is, the destruction of precisely selected areas of tissue (biology), tissue using ionizing radiation rather than excision with a blade. Like other forms of radiation therapy (also called radiotherapy), it is usually used to treat cancer. Lund (, , ) is a city in the southern Swedish provinces of Sweden, province of Scania, across the Øresund, Öresund strait from Copenhagen.
