Laurence Evelyn Hyde (6 June 1914 – 8 August 1987) was an English-born Canadian film maker, painter, and graphic artist, known for his work with the National Film Board of Canada, stamp designs for the Canadian Postal Service, and the wordless novel ''Southern Cross'' (1951). Life Hyde was born in the United Kingdom at Kingston upon Thames (near London), but immigrated to Canada with his parents in 1926. Settling in Toronto, Hyde was drawn to the arts by exhibits at the Art Gallery of Toronto (now the Art Gallery of Ontario) and especially seeing Lawren Harris' ''North Shore, Lake Superior''. "That was the first one that made a great impression on me and it's then that I became really serious about art." He began attending night classes at Toronto's Central Technical High School where his teachers included Carl Schaefer and Charles Goldhamer. Sydney Newman
Sydney Cecil Newman (April 1, 1917 – October 30, 1997) was a Canadian film and television producer, who played a pioneering role in British television drama from the late 1950s to the late 1960s. After his return to Canada in 1970, Newman was appointed Acting Director of the Broadcast Programs Branch for the Canadian Radio and Television Commission (CRTC) and then head of the National Film Board of Canada (NFB). He also occupied senior positions at the Canadian Film Development Corporation and Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, and acted as an advisor to the Secretary of State. During his time in Britain in the 1950s and 1960s, he worked first with the ABC Weekend TV (later Thames Television), before moving across to the BBC in 1962, holding the role of Head of Drama with both organisations. Southern Cross (wordless Novel)
''Southern Cross'' is the sole wordless novel by Canadian artist Laurence Hyde (artist), Laurence Hyde (1914–1987). Published in 1951 in literature, 1951, its 118 wood engraving, wood-engraved images narrate the impact of nuclear weapons testing, atomic testing on Pacific islanders. Hyde made the book to express his anger at the US military's Operation Crossroads, nuclear tests in the Bikini Atoll. The wordless novel genre had flourished primarily during the 1920s and 1930s, but by the 1940s even the most prolific practitioners had abandoned it. Hyde was familiar with some such works by Lynd Ward, Otto Nückel, and the form's pioneer Frans Masereel. The high-contrast artwork of ''Southern Cross'' features dynamic curving lines uncommon in wood engraving and combines abstract imagery with realistic detail.
