Lauren C. Vaughan is an American civil servant from Washington, D.C. who served as Secretary of the District of Columbia from 2015 to 2018. Education Vaughan earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mass Media Arts from Hampton University and a Master of Science in Engineering and Technology Management from George Washington University. Career She has since worked in various organizations as trainer, manager and chief executive. From 2001 she was Co-Chair and Board Chair of My Sister's Place, a domestic violence shelter. From 2009 to 2015, she was Chief Executive of My Sister's Place. My Sister's Place ( RR: Durebang; MR: Turebang; Hangul: 두레방) is an advocacy and counseling group founded in March 1986 in Uijeongbu, South Korea. The group is a non-profit government organization that supports women involved and affected by prostitution in military camp towns. It focuses on improving the lives of women who have entered the sex industry in and around U.S. military base camp towns. Muriel Elizabeth Bowser (born August 2, 1972) is an American politician serving since 2015 as the eighth mayor of the District of Columbia. A member of the Democratic Party, she previously represented the 4th ward as a member of the Council of the District of Columbia from 2007 to 2015. She is the second female mayor of the District of Columbia after Sharon Pratt, and the first woman to be reelected to that position. Elected to the Advisory Neighborhood Commission in 2004, Bowser was elected to the council in a special election in 2007, to succeed Adrian Fenty, who had been elected mayor.
