Laura Zirbes
Laura Zirbes (April 26, 1884 in Buffalo, New York – June 9, 1967 in Columbus, Ohio) was an American educator, an important figure in education and reading instruction. Career Zirbes began her teaching career at an elementary school in Cleveland from 1903 to 1919, and then went on to work at the experimental Lincoln School at Teachers College, Columbia University from 1920 until 1926. She earned her doctoral degree from Columbia University in 1928. From 1928 she taught at Ohio State University, until her retirement in 1954. In all her teaching years combined, she taught for 61 years, including summer sessions until 1964. During so many years of teaching, Zirbes experienced some of the most important issues affecting education in the United States throughout the twentieth century. Arthur Eugene Bestor Jr. (September 20, 1908 – December 13, 1994) was a historian of the United States, and during the 1950s a noted critic of American public education. Biography Early life Bestor was born on September 20, 1908, in Chautauqua, New York. He was the eldest son of Arthur E. Bestor Sr. and Jeannette Lemon. In 1904-1944 his father was the president of the Chautauqua Institution, an educational and religious community in western New York State. Bestor was raised and educated in Chautauqua and New York City, where he attended the Horace Mann School. William Heard Kilpatrick
William Heard Kilpatrick (November 20, 1871 – February 13, 1965) was an American pedagogue and a pupil, a colleague and a successor of John Dewey (1859–1952). Kilpatrick was a major figure in the progressive education movement of the early 20th century. Biography Kilpatrick was born in White Plains, Georgia. He had an orthodox upbringing and was educated at Mercer University and Johns Hopkins University where he later became a mathematics teacher at High School and at Mercer University. He first met John Dewey in 1898 and again met him in 1907. Kilpatrick decided to make philosophy of education his specialty and attended all courses given by Dewey at Teachers College, Columbia University.
