Laura W. Maxwell (October 13, 1877 – August 7, 1967), also known as Laura Maxwell, was an American artist. She played a role in the artistic community of Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, where she settled. Maxwell contributed to the establishment of the Carmel Art Association. Maxwell's artistic ability extended beyond the borders of Carmel and the Monterey Peninsula, as her floral paintings, marines, and landscapes in both oil and watercolor gained recognition in various art centers worldwide. Her works reached audiences as far as Paris, France, and made their way to exhibitions in Peking, China. Early life Maxwell was born on October 13, 1877, in Carson City, Nevada. She was the daughter of Colonel Warren Wasson (1833–1896) and Grace Adelaide Augusta Treadway (1839–1906). Her father was an early pioneer of Nevada. Carson City is an independent city and the capital of the U.S. state of Nevada. As of the 2020 census, the population was 58,639, making it the sixth largest city in Nevada. The majority of the city's population lives in Eagle Valley, on the eastern edge of the Carson Range, a branch of the Sierra Nevada, about south of Reno. The city is named after the mountain man Kit Carson. The town began as a stopover for California-bound immigrants, but developed into a city with the Comstock Lode, a silver strike in the mountains to the northeast. The city has served as Nevada's capital since statehood in 1864; for much of its history it was a hub for the Virginia and Truckee Railroad, although the tracks were removed in 1950. Before 1969, Carson City was the county seat of Ormsby County.
