Laura Chavez
Laura Catherine Chavez (born April 3, 1982) is an American blues, soul, and rhythm and blues guitarist, songwriter and record producer. She has worked with many other musicians, including Deborah Coleman, Candye Kane, Dani Wilde, The Mannish Boys, Mike Ledbetter, Monster Mike Welch, Vanessa Collier, Casey Hensley and Whitney Shay. Her playing style is based in the Texas and Chicago blues traditions, both classic and modern genres. In 2021, she was nominated at the 42nd Blues Music Awards in the category 'Instrumentalist - Guitar'. This was her second such nomination, as Chavez had been listed two years earlier in the same category. In 2023, Chavez finally triumphed in the same category 'Instrumentalist - Guitar'. The Blues Music Awards, formerly known as the W. C. Handy Awards (or "The Handys"), are awards presented by the Blues Foundation, a non-profit organization set up to foster blues heritage. The awards were originally named in honor of W. C. Handy, "Father of the Blues." The first award was presented in 1980 and is "universally recognized as the highest accolade afforded musicians and songwriters in blues music." Chris Cain
Chris Cain (born November 19, 1955) is an American blues musician. He began playing professionally as a teenager in local clubs, at festivals, and at private events. He attended Pomona College. Cain received four Blues Music Award nominations in 1987 for his debut album, ''Late Night City Blues'', including Guitarist of the Year. Big Daddy Wilson (born Adam Wilson Blount, August 19, 1960) is an American electric and soul blues singer and songwriter. Most of his solo recordings have been released by the German record label, Ruf Records. To date, Wilson has appeared on more than a dozen albums. Wilson has lived in Germany for almost thirty years. Life and career The son of John Henry Wilson and Dorothy Lee Blount, Adam Wilson Blount was born in Edenton, North Carolina, United States. A shy boy, he was raised by his mother and grandmother, and worked in the cotton and tobacco plantations during his childhood and most of his teenage years. Wilson sang in his local church choir, and gospel and country music from a local radio station was the only music he heard during that time. Matt Hill (born June 17, 1985) is an American electric blues singer, guitarist and songwriter. To date, Hill has released two albums, and he has also gained a reputation for his energetic live performances. Hill won a Blues Music Award in May 2011, in the category of 'Best New Artist Debut' for his first album, ''On the Floor''. Life and musical career Hill was born in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, United States. Originally inspired by his uncle's listening choice of Creedence Clearwater Revival, Hill had learned to play the guitar by his mid-teens. He met the drummer Chuck Cotton at a local blues gig, and impressed by the fact that Cotton had played alongside Bob Margolin, they jointly started a band, which ended up competing at the 2005 International Blues Challenge in Memphis, Tennessee. Sue Foley (born March 29, 1968) is a Canadian blues guitarist and singer. She has released 15 albums since her debut with ''Young Girl Blues'' (1992). In May 2020, Foley won her first Blues Music Award, in the 'Koko Taylor Award (Traditional Blues Female)' category. Early life Foley was born in Ottawa, Ontario, and spent her early childhood in Canada. She learned to play guitar at age 13, became interested in blues music from listening to the Rolling Stones, and played her first gig at age 16. After high school graduation, she relocated to Vancouver where she formed The Sue Foley Band and toured Canada. The International Blues Challenge (IBC) is a music competition run by the Blues Foundation.
