Laughing Squid is a blog featuring items of art, culture, and technology, as well as a web hosting company based out of New York City, New York. History Laughing Squid was founded on November 16, 1995 in San Francisco, California as a film and video production company by Scott Beale, producing documentaries, including ''Alonso G. Smith, A Half Century of Social Surrealism'' about San Francisco Bay Area surrealist painter Alonso Smith and ''You’d Better Watch Out: Portland Santacon ’96'' about the SantaCon event in Portland, OR organized by the San Francisco Cacophony Society in 1996. In 1996, Laughing Squid launched The Squid List, a San Francisco Bay Area art and culture events calendar and email list that was decommissioned in 2013. Frank Chu (born March 24, 1960) is an eccentric and conspiracy theorist from San Francisco. Since 1999 or earlier, Chu has been campaigning to impeach an array of former U.S. Presidents he considers guilty of collaborating with a nefarious network of alien populations called the "12 Galaxies" to film him against his will, to broadcast this footage intergalactically, and to embezzle the royalties he is owed as a television and movie star. Chu lives in Oakland, and commutes daily to San Francisco and nearby locales in order to reach the largest audience of passers-by and television news crews for his street protests about this labor dispute. John Law (American Artist)
John Law (born November 17, 1958) is an American artist, culture-jammer, and a primary member of the Cacophony Society and a member of the Suicide Club. He is also a co-founder of Burning Man (a.k.a. Zone Trip #4, a.k.a. Black Rock City) which evolved out of the spirit of the Cacophony Society when a precursor solstice party was banned from San Francisco's Baker Beach and merged with another Cacophony event on the Black Rock desert in Nevada. Cacophony Society
The Cacophony Society is "a randomly gathered network of free spirits united in the pursuit of experiences beyond the pale of mainstream society." It was started in 1986 by surviving members of the now defunct Suicide Club of San Francisco. Cacophony has been described as an indirect culture jamming outgrowth of the Dada movement. One of its central concepts is the Trip to the Zone, or Zone Trip, inspired by the 1979 Film '' Stalker'' by Andrei Tarkovsky. According to self-designated members of the Society, "you may already be a member." The anarchic nature of the Society means that membership is left open-ended and anyone may sponsor an event, though not every idea pitched garners attendance by members.
