Latvian Women’s National League
The National League of Latvian Women or Latvian Women's National League (Latvijas Sieviesu Nacionālā līga) was a Latvian women's organization. As was the case in Estonia, women's rights had been a subject of public debate in the press since the 1880s, mainly in connection to the nationalism. As in the other Baltic countries however, no political organizations could exist prior to the introduction of Parliamentatism in Russia in 1905. A couple of smaller women's associations were founded after 1905, but they dealt with limited subjects. The League was founded in Saint Petersburg in Russia in 1917. It was an ideological society for Latvian refugees with a national consciousness. In 1922, the League was renewed in Riga in independent Latvia. Zelma Cēsniece-Freidenfelde served as its first chairperson, followed by Berta Pipina. It mostly tended to charities for women and children. Zelma Cēsniece-Freidenfelde
Zelma Cēsniece-Freidenfelde (17 February 1892 – 22 December 1929) was a Latvian physician and politician. In 1920 she was one of the six women elected to the Constitutional Assembly, Latvia's first female parliamentarians. Berta Pīpiņa
Berta Pīpiņa ( née Berta Ziemele; 28 September 1883 – 1942) was a Latvian teacher, journalist, politician and women's rights activist. She was the first woman elected to serve in the Saeima although there was six female members Constitutional Assembly of Latvia from May 1, 1920, until November 7, 1922, when the 1st Saeima convened. Active in women's rights, during her time in the Riga City Council and the Saeima, she strove to enact laws and policies to promote women's equality and protect families. When Soviet troops occupied Latvia, she was deported to Siberia, her life was removed from encyclopedias, and she died in a gulag. International Council Of Women
The International Council of Women (ICW) is a women's rights organization working across national boundaries for the common cause of advocating human rights for women. In March and April 1888, women leaders came together in Washington, D.C., with 80 speakers and 49 delegates representing 53 women's organizations from nine countries: Canada, the United States, Ireland, India, United Kingdom, Finland, Denmark, France and Norway. Women from professional organizations, trade unions, arts groups and benevolent societies participate. National councils are affiliated to the ICW and thus make themselves heard at the international level.
