Latvia first participated at the Olympic Games in 1924. After the nation was occupied by the Soviet Union in 1940, Latvian athletes competed for the Soviet Union at the Olympics between 1952 and 1988. After the independence of Latvia and the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, the nation returned to the Olympic Games in 1992 and has competed at every Games since then. Latvian athletes have won a total of 21 medals at the Summer Olympic Games and 9 medals at the Winter Olympic Games. They have won a remarkably high proportion of silver medals, with 5 gold medals. These totals do not include medals won by Latvian athletes while competing for the Soviet Union. The National Olympic Committee for Latvia was first created in 1922. The current NOC is the Latvian Olympic Committee, which was recognized by the International Olympic Committee in 1991. Latvian Olympic Committee
The Latvian Olympic Committee ( or LOK) is a non-profit organization that is the National Olympic Committee for Latvia. Its headquarters are in Riga. History The Committee was created on 23 April 1922. In 1923 it received a notice from International Olympic Committee that Latvia could take part in the next Olympic Games. After the occupation of Latvia by the Soviet Union in 1940, its activity was suspended. During this time, Latvians competed as part of USSR delegation. The committee was reformed on 17 September 1988 and recognised by the IOC in 1991. Latvia competed at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, Germany. 29 competitors, all men, took part in 16 events in 6 sports. It would be the last time that Latvia would compete at the Summer Games as an independent nation until the 1992 Summer Olympics. Latvia competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, United Kingdom from July 27 to August 12, 2012. This was the nation's tenth appearance at the Summer Olympics. The Latvian Olympic Committee sent a total of 46 athletes to the Games, 32 men and 14 women, to compete in 12 sports. Sixteen athletes had competed in Beijing, including silver medalist Ainārs Kovals in the men's javelin throw, and defending Olympic champion Māris Štrombergs in men's BMX cycling.
