Latvia At The 2014 Winter Olympics
Latvia competed at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, from 7 to 23 February 2014. The Latvian team consisted of 58 athletes in nine sports. These were the third consecutive games the country qualified to send 58 athletes. Ice hockey player Vitalijs Pavlovs tested positive for methylhexaneamine and was thrown out of the Olympics. Latvia originally won two silver medals and two bronze medals. In November 2017, the Russian Bobsleigh teams that came first and fourth in the four-man event, was disqualified. In addition, the Russian Bobsleigh teams that came first and fourth in the two-man event, was also disqualified. This meant Latvia moved from the original 5th place to the bronze medal position in the two-man event and from the original silver medal to the gold medal position in the four-man event respectively. Latvian Olympic Committee
The Latvian Olympic Committee ( or LOK) is a non-profit organization that is the National Olympic Committee for Latvia. Its headquarters are in Riga. History The Committee was created on 23 April 1922. In 1923 it received a notice from International Olympic Committee that Latvia could take part in the next Olympic Games. After the occupation of Latvia by the Soviet Union in 1940, its activity was suspended. During this time, Latvians competed as part of USSR delegation. The committee was reformed on 17 September 1988 and recognised by the IOC in 1991. Arvis Vilkaste
Arvis Vilkaste (born 8 April 1989) is a Latvian bobsledder, brakeman who has competed since 2010. He won a gold medal in the four-man event at the FIBT World Championships 2016 in Igls, Austria (with pilot Oskars Melbārdis, Daumants Dreiškens and Jānis Strenga). It was the first ever World Championships gold medal in bobsled for Latvia. He also won a bronze medal in the four-man event at FIBT World Championships 2015 in Winterberg, Germany as well as 2012 World Junior Championship title in the four-man event. The team relay luge at the 2014 Winter Olympics was held on 13 February 2014 at the Sliding Center Sanki in Rzhanaya Polyana, Russia. This was the inaugural event of the team relay at the Olympics. Elīza Tīruma (also Cauce, born 21 August 1990) is a Latvian luger who has competed since 2006. She won a bronze medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics in the team relay event and placed 12th individually. Mārtiņš Rubenis (born 26 September 1978) is a retired Latvian luger who competed between 1998 and 2014. Luge at the 2014 Winter Olympics was held at the Sliding Center Sanki near Krasnaya Polyana, Russia. The four events were scheduled for 8–13 February 2014. In April 2011 the International Olympic Committee approved the addition of the mixed team relay event (one sled from each of the other three events compete per country), meaning luge will have four events on the program for the first time. In December 2017, IOC concluded that two Russian lugers Albert Demchenko and Tatiana Ivanova had committed an anti-doping violation and stripped Russia of 2 silver medals. In January 2018, both athletes successfully appealed against the IOC decision at the Court of Arbitration for Sport and both medals were returned to Russia. Martins Dukurs (born 31 March 1984) is a Latvian skeleton racer who has competed since 1998. He is a six-time world champion in men's skeleton, a double Olympic silver winner (at Vancouver 2010 and Sochi 2014), and the athlete with the most World Cup titles with a total of 11, having won eight consecutive titles between 2010 and 2017, plus another three consecutive titles between 2020 and 2022.
