Port Latta, Tasmania
Port Latta is a locality in North West Tasmania, with a processing plant and port used to export iron ore from the Savage River, Tasmania, Savage River mine. Ore is transported from mine to port by a slurry pipeline, which is 85 km long and paralleled by Pipeline Road. After de-watering, the ore is loaded onto ships via conveyor belts. The capacity of the mine, pipeline and conveyor belt is about 2.4MTpa. The mine and port opened in 1967, and was still operating in 2021 with an expected life of mine to 2035 as per their 2020 yearly report. Frank Forrest Latta
Frank Forrest Latta (1892–1983), was a California historian and ethnographer of the Yokuts people. He also wrote histories of the early European-American settlement of the San Joaquin Valley. Early life Frank Forrest Latta was the son of Presbyterian minister Eli C. Latta and teacher Harmonia Campbell, born on September 18, 1892, in Stanislaus County, near Orestimba Creek. Latta lived most of his life in the San Joaquin Valley. His father and three older brothers had come to California from Arkansas during the California Gold Rush. His father and one brother remained in California, where they were joined by his mother. One brother returned to Arkansas, and the third wrote that he was returning to Arkansas with $8,000 in gold, but disappeared without a trace. As a young boy Latta worked on several ranches in the San Joaquin Valley. He became interested in the stories of the early pioneers. Reginald Augustine 'Whip' Latta (1897–1970) was an Australian professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1910s and 1920s who also became a coach. An Australia national and New South Wales state representative forward, he played his club football in Sydney for the Balmain club, with whom he won five premierships. Latta also coached the team. Background Latta was born in Balmain, New South Wales to parents James and Mary Latta in 1897. Playing career He came through the junior ranks to debut for Balmain in 1916 as a 19-year-old. He went on to play fourteen first grade seasons with Balmain between 1916–1930. He was a blonde haired lock-forward and he was known by the nickname 'Whip'. Sir John Latta, 1st Baronet (9 May 1867 – 5 December 1946) was a Scottish shipping magnate. Latta was born in Old Cumnock, Ayrshire, the son of William Latta,Biography, ''Who Was Who'' and was educated at Ayr Academy. He entered the family business, Lawther, Latta & Co Ltd, which owned the Nitrate Producers' Steamship Co Ltd, and later became chairman. Under his chairmanship, the Nitrate Producers' Steamship Company outgrew its title and expanded into all areas of cargo shipping, operating large freighters, mostly built by Shorts. The fleet performed sterling service in the South African War, First World War, and Second World War, and for his services to his country in the First World War, Latta was created a baronet in the 1920 New Year Honours. John Latta (March 2, 1836 – February 15, 1913) was an American lawyer and politician from Pennsylvania who served as the first lieutenant governor of Pennsylvania from 1875 to 1879. He also served as a Democratic member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives from 1872 to 1873 and the Pennsylvania Senate from 1863 to 1866. Early life and education Latta was born in Unity Township, Pennsylvania, to Moses and Eliza (Graham) Latta. He was educated at Sewickley Academy and Elder's Ridge Academy. He read law under D.H. Hazen in Pittsburgh, entered Yale Law School in 1857 and graduated in 1859. He was admitted to the Westmoreland County bar in 1859 and opened a law firm in Greensburg, Pennsylvania. Ivory Latta (born September 25, 1984) is an American professional basketball player who is currently a free agent. She was drafted 11th overall by the Detroit Shock in the 2007 WNBA Draft. A 5'6" (1.68 m) guard noted for her three-point shooting and on-court enthusiasm, she played college basketball for the North Carolina Tar Heels. Delbert Leroy Latta (March 5, 1920 – May 12, 2016) was an American lawyer and politician who served 15 terms as a United States Representative from Ohio's 5th district from 1959 to 1989. A Republican, he is one of the state's longest-serving politicians as well as the father of Bob Latta, who has held his father's congressional seat since 2007. Life and career Latta was born in Weston, Ohio, the son of Bessie Viola (Thompson) and Lester Latta. He attended the public schools in North Baltimore, Ohio, and graduated from McComb High School in 1938. Latta Plantation
Latta Place (formerly Latta Plantation), also known as Latta House, is a historic house located in Huntersville, North Carolina near Mountain Island Lake. Built in about 1800 in a Federal style, the plantation also contains some elements of Georgian design, including the house's main staircase. The house and its environs are currently used as a living history exhibit and museum dedicated to exhibiting the facets of daily life in the antebellum North Carolina Piedmont. Historic Latta Plantation hosts a variety of living history events throughout the year, including battle reenactments, summer camps, and homeschool programs. The site was formerly operated by a nonprofit corporation, but the land is owned by Mecklenburg County, and maintained by the Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation department.
