Latium, Texas
Latium (pronounced "Latcham" or "Lotzyum"), is an unincorporated community in Washington County, Texas, United States. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 30 in 2000. It is located within the Greater Houston metropolitan area. History It was one of five Latin colonies established in Texas after 1848 by political refugees from Germany. Early German immigrants included civil engineer Hermann Rogalla von Bieberstein, who eventually became a well-known Texas surveyor and artist Rudolph Melchior, who adorned the Winedale Inn. In 1868, Czechs landed in Latium. In 1873, Reverend Josef Chromik established a mission among Catholic Czech immigrants in Texas. A post office opened in 1884 and was shut down in 1907. 50 people were living in Latium in 1892. Round Top, Texas
Round Top is a town in Fayette County, Texas, United States. The population was 90 at the 2010 census. History As a part of the Stephen F. Austin colony, James Winn acquired in 1831; the present townsite was included in this tract. The community was originally known as "Townsend", after early settler Nathaniel Townsend (whose original house still exists as the Texana Lodge). Later the town was renamed "Round Top", since the postmaster lived in a house with a round tower. Greenvine, Texas
Greenvine is an unincorporated community in southwestern Washington County, Texas, United States. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 35 in 2000. It is located within the Greater Houston metropolitan area. History The first German Baptist Church in Texas was established there in 1861 after J. Frank Kiefer, a German Baptist evangelist, led a revival there in 1860. When neighboring Vinegrove began to deteriorate, Greenvine, which had its own post office from 1879 until 1907, began to flourish. The community served as a supply hub for the nearby agricultural region by 1879. In that year, Greenvine businessman and farmer William Seidel found natural gas and used it as fuel for the first time in Texas.
