Las Moras Creek
Las Moras Creek, a stream in Kinney and Maverick Counties in Texas. Its source is on the northern foot of Las Moras Mountain, five miles northeast of Brackettville in Kinney County, at . It runs south southwest for forty miles, through Las Moras Springs at Brackettville, to its mouth at its confluence with the Rio Grande, five miles northwest of Quemado in Maverick County. History The San Antonio-El Paso Road crossed Las Moras Creek at Las Moras Springs, where Fort Clark would be established to guard the route. Kinney County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 3,129. Its county seat is Brackettville. The county was created in 1850 and later organized in 1874. It is named for Henry Lawrence Kinney, an early settler. Kinney County's self-proclaimed biggest issue since the 2010s is undocumented immigration from Mexico through the county. The county claims it does not have the resources to deal with the large number of migrants, and in 2021 proclaimed a state of emergency. Maverick County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 57,887. Its county seat is Eagle Pass. The county was created in 1856 and organized in 1871. Brackettville, Texas
Brackettville is a city in Kinney County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,688 at the 2010 census, down from 1,876 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Kinney County. History Founded in 1852 as "Las Moras" (the name of a nearby spring and the creek it feeds), the town initially was a supply stop on the old San Antonio- El Paso road and a supply depot for the U.S. Army's Fort Clark (the fort was established the same year). Later the town was named "Brackett" after Oscar B. Brackett, the owner of the first dry goods store in the area. In 1873, when a post office was awarded, "ville" was appended to the name to differentiate it from another town. The town grew quickly through the 19th century with the expansion of the garrison at Fort Clark for the Indian Wars. The town's fortunes were tied to the fort. Las Moras Springs,"''The Mulberries''" in Spanish, are a group of springs near Brackettville in Kinney County, Texas. Las Moras Springs are located on the grounds of Fort Clark in Brackettville and were the reason for the location of the fort and the settlement there. The springs are the ninth largest group of springs in Texas, discharging an average of about 12-14 million gallons per day. They are artesian springs arising from a fault overlying the Edwards limestone. It emerges at an elevation of about 1,096 feet. The springs fill a large walled-in area, some of which spills into a 300-foot-long swimming pool. Its excess flows into a bypass channel around the pool. Fort Clark was a frontier fort located just off U.S. Route 90 near Brackettville, in Kinney County, Texas, United States. It later became the headquarters for the 2nd Cavalry Division. The Fort Clark Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 6, 1979. The Commanding Officer's Quarters at Fort Clark were designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1988. The Fort Clark Guardhouse became a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1962.
