Lars Eskeland
Lars Eskeland (6 March 1867 – 30 September 1942) was a Norwegian educator and writer, and proponent for Nynorsk. Personal life Eskeland was born at Stord as the son of farmers Øystein Larsson Eskeland and Mari Larsdotter Vatna, and was a brother of Severin Eskeland. He married Marta Nerhus in 1893. He was uncle of Ivar Eskeland. Career Eskeland co-founded the Voss Folk High School at Voss in 1895, and served as long-term principal and teacher at this school. Among his students were several later well known writers, including Tarjei Vesaas, Sjur Bygd, Tore Ørjasæter, Olav Sletto and Ragnvald Vaage. He wrote a total of about sixty books or other publications. Severin Eskeland (1880-1964)
Severin Eskeland (31 March 1880 – 18 July 1964) was a Norwegian educator, biographer and elected official. Biography Eskeland was born at Stord in Hordaland, Norway. He was the son of Øystein Larsson Eskeland (1840–1933) and Mari Larsdotter Vatna (1844–1932). He was the brother of Lars Eskeland. He received a degree from Hans Nielsen Hauges Minde in Kristiania (now Oslo) during 1903. From 1903 to 1905, he studied at the University of Kristiania (now University of Oslo), but did not take the final exam. He also conducted study trips to Germany, Switzerland and France. From 1903 to 1950 he was employed in the field of education. He worked at schools in Oslo, Kristiansand, Notodden and Levanger until 1917. Nynorsk
Nynorsk () () is one of the two written standards of the Norwegian language, the other being Bokmål. From 12 May 1885, it became the state-sanctioned version of Ivar Aasen's standard Norwegian language ( no, Landsmål) parallel to the Dano-Norwegian written language (''Riksmål''). Nynorsk became the name in 1929, and it is after a series of reforms still a variation which is closer to , whereas Bokmål is closer to ''Riksmål'' and Danish. Between 10 and 15 percent of Norwegians (Primarily in the west around the city of Bergen,) have Nynorsk as their official language form, estimated by the number of students attending ''videregående skole'' (secondary education). Ragnvald Vaage
Ragnvald Vaage (29 April 1889 – 27 June 1966) was a Norwegian poet, novelist and children's writer. Biography He was born at Husnes in Kvinnherad, Norway. His parents were Ola Larsson Vaage (1844–97) and Ragnhild Larsdotter Oppsanger (1855–89). In 1906 he started at Voss Folk High School (''Voss Folkehøgskule'') at Seim where he stayed for two years. Then he spent a year at Jæren and studied horticulture. He later attended Askov College (''Askov Højskole'') in Vejen. His first poetry collections were ''Liv som strir'' (1912), ''Bylgja'' (1913) and ''Strengspel'' (1914). Among his children's books are ''Gutane på Tedneholmen'' (1923) ''Den forunderlege vegen'' (1949), ''Den gode sumaren'' (1955) and the prize-winning ''Stivnakkane'' (1957). Knut Helle
Knut Helle (19 December 1930 – 27 June 2015) was a Norwegian historian. A professor at the University of Bergen from 1973 to 2000, he specialized in the late medieval history of Norway. He has contributed to several large works. Early life, education and marriage He was born in Larvik as the son of school inspector Hermann Olai Helle (1893–1973) and teacher Berta Marie Malm (1906–1991). He was the older brother of politician Ingvar Lars Helle. The family moved to Hetland when Knut Helle was seventeen years old. Olav Sletto (21 June 1886 – 24 October 1963 ) was a Norwegian novelist and educator. He was born in Hol, and was the father of Eva Sletto. He made his literary debut in 1908, with the story ''Dei gamle''. Among his historical novels is the trilogy ''Valet'', ''Primas'' and ''Frukt'' from 1926 to 1928. Stord
Stord is a municipality in Vestland county, Norway. It is located in the traditional district of Sunnhordland. Stord is sometimes called "Norway in miniature" since it has such a variety of landscapes: coastline, fjords, forests, agricultural land, and mountain areas. The administrative centre of the municipality is the town of Leirvik, which is also the largest town in the municipality and the whole region of Sunnhordland. Leirvik was declared a town in 1997. Other population centres in the municipality include the large village of Sagvåg and the smaller villages of Litlabø and Grov.
