Lawrence Roberts (scientist)
Lawrence Gilman Roberts (December 21, 1937 – December 26, 2018) was an American engineer who received the Draper Prize in 2001 "for the development of the Internet", and the Principe de Asturias Award in 2002. As a program manager and later office director at the Advanced Research Projects Agency, Roberts and his team created the ARPANET using packet switching techniques invented by British computer scientist Donald Davies and American Paul Baran. The ARPANET, which was built by the Massachusetts-based company Bolt Beranek and Newman (BBN), was a predecessor to the modern Internet. He asked Leonard Kleinrock to apply mathematical models to simulate the performance of the network. Roberts later served as CEO of the commercial packet-switching network Telenet. Lawrence Edward Roberts III (born October 20, 1982) is an American former professional basketball player. Standing at , he played at the power forward position. College career Roberts attended Baylor University for two seasons, where he made the Big 12 All-Freshman Team, but transferred to Mississippi State University in 2003 following the basketball scandal that rocked Baylor's program that year. He was a first-team All-American and the SEC Player of the Year in 2004, leading Mississippi State to its first top-two seeding in the NCAA tournament. In the 2003–04 season he averaged 16.9 points and 10.1 rebounds. He was first-team All-SEC and a first-team All-American, finishing third to Jameer Nelson and Emeka Okafor for national player of the year honors. Lawrence "Larry" Roberts is a former Democratic member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. Roberts attended Uniontown High School, graduating in 1959. He attended the Community College of the Air Force and Bowie State College before earning a master's at Central Michigan University in 1981. Roberts was first elected to represent the 51st legislative district in 1992. The Herald-Standard newspaper sued in 2000 to gain access to Roberts's cellular and long-distance phone records, citing the fact that the calls were paid for with state money. The suit was dismissed, but in 2003 the Pennsylvania Supreme Court ordered the Commonwealth Court of Pennsylvania to reconsider whether a Herald-Standard reporter's civil rights were violated when Roberts showed the sought-after phone records to another reporter, but not to the original reporter. Larry Roberts (September 28, 1926 – July 17, 1992) was an American actor who was most active during the 1950s. Roberts is best known for his role of playing the voice of Tramp in ''Lady and the Tramp''. Roberts was little known for other roles, although he did play some minor uncredited roles in ''Bandstand Revue'' and ''Ace High-Hits''. Biography Early life Larry Roberts was born Lawrence Saltzman on September 28, 1926. He was the only child of Robert E. and Mabel (Haber) Saltzman. He was a native of Cleveland, Ohio. After his parents divorced, his father moved to Los Angeles. During World War II, Roberts served with General Patton's Third Army in France, Germany and Austria. After his military service, Roberts went to Los Angeles on vacation, but stayed there to help organize the Circle Theatre. Larry P. Roberts (June 2, 1963 – December 5, 2016) was an American football defensive end of the National Football League (NFL). Career Roberts was born in Dothan, Alabama, and began his football career at Northview High School in Dothan. He subsequently starred as a defensive end at the University of Alabama. In Round 2 of the 1986 NFL Draft, at 6’3" and 264 lbs, Roberts was drafted as the #39 pick. Roberts played eight consecutive seasons for the San Francisco 49ers, from 1986 to 1993.
