Larry Lutz
Lawrence H. Lutz (1913–1998) was an American football player and coach. He played for the California Golden Bears football team from 1933 and 1935. He was selected as a consensus All-American at the tackle position in 1935. Biography A native of Santa Ana, California, Lutz played football for Santa Ana High School and was selected as the California high school player of the year in 1931. Lutz next enrolled at the University of California in Berkeley, California. He played tackle for the California Golden Bears as a sophomore in 1933 and as a senior in 1935. He was unable to play in 1934 due to an injury. As a senior in 1935, he was selected as a first-team All-American by the Associated Press, the All-America Board (a board made up of Glenn "Pop" Warner, Christy Walsh, Elmer Layden, Howard Jones and Frank Thomas), the Central Press Association (selected based on the votes of 53 college football captains), and the Walter Camp Football Foundation. The Central Press Association was American newspaper syndication company based in Cleveland, Ohio. It was in business from 1910 to 1971. Originally independent, it was a subsidiary of King Features Syndicate from 1930 onwards. At its peak, the Central Press supplied features, columns, comic strips, and photographs to more than 400 newspapers and 12 million daily readers. Calgary Stampeders
The Calgary Stampeders are a professional Canadian football team based in Calgary, Alberta. The Stampeders compete in the West Division of the Canadian Football League (CFL). The club plays its home games at McMahon Stadium and are the third-oldest active franchise in the CFL. Leonard Blaine "Stub" Allison (November 15, 1892 – December 12, 1961) was an American football, basketball, and baseball coach. He served as the head football coach at the University of Washington (1920), the University of South Dakota (1922–1926), at the University of California, Berkeley (1935–1944), compiling a career college football record of 80–66–5. At California, Allison amassed a 58–42–2 record. In 1937 and 1938, he guided the California Golden Bears football, Bears to back-to-back ten-win seasons, which was at the time the only such occurrence in school history. His 1937 California Golden Bears football team, 1937 squad, dubbed the "Thunder Team", won the 1938 Rose Bowl, was named the College football national championships in NCAA Division I FBS, national champions by a number of selectors, and is considered by some sportswriters to have been the best team in school history. 1936 NFL Draft
The 1936 National Football League Draft was the 1st draft of National Football League (NFL). It took place on February 8, 1936, at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The draft was instituted in an effort to end bidding wars among the league's teams by the arbitrary assignment of negotiating rights to amateur players. It was haphazardly decided that the last place team from the previous season would get the first selection, and the process would continue in reverse order of the standings. Under this structure the Philadelphia Eagles, who finished at 2–9, would select first. This was the only draft to have nine rounds; the number increased to ten for the 1937 draft. The first player ever drafted, Jay Berwanger, who had previously been awarded the initial Heisman Trophy, never played in the NFL. His rights were traded by the Philadelphia Eagles to the Chicago Bears, as the Eagles felt they would be unable to meet Berwanger's reported demand of $1000 per game. ...
