Larry Hinson
Larry Hinson (born August 5, 1944) is an American professional golfer who played on the PGA Tour from 1968–1976. Hinson was born in Gastonia, North Carolina, but has lived almost his entire life in Douglas, Georgia. Despite having a left arm slightly withered from boyhood polio, he was able to compete in amateur and professional golf. Hinson attended East Tennessee State University and was a member of the golf team. He was the individual medalist at the NCAA Division II Men's Golf Championships in 1967. Hinson had more than 30 top-10 finishes during his PGA Tour career including a win at the 1969 Greater New Orleans Open Invitational. In that tournament, he defeated Frank Beard on the third playoff hole. He finished the 1975 San Antonio Texas Open tied for first place in regulation play at 13-under-par 275; however, he lost in a playoff when Don January made a birdie on the second extra hole. Donald Ray January (born November 20, 1929) is an American retired professional golfer, best known for winning the 1967 PGA Championship. Early life Born in Plainview, Texas, January graduated from Sunset High School in Dallas. He was a member of the North Texas State golf team that won four consecutive NCAA Division I titles from 1949 to 1952. January is a Member of the Sunset High School Hall of Fame. While in college as a sophomore, as part of his scholarship, January helped teach a beginning golf class, where he met his future wife, Patricia "Pat" Rushing. They both graduated in 1953 and eloped to Ardmore, Oklahoma. They lived in San Antonio while Don was in the Air Force, and began their family—two boys and a girl. The 1969 PGA Tour season was played from January 9 to December 7. The season consisted of 49 official money events. Billy Casper, Raymond Floyd, Dave Hill, and Jack Nicklaus won the most tournaments, three each, and there were 14 first-time winners. Frank Beard was the leading money winner with earnings of $164,707. Orville Moody was voted the PGA Player of the Year and Dave Hill won the Vardon Trophy for the lowest scoring average. This is generally regarded as the first season of an independent PGA Tour. The tour began to break off from the PGA of America in August 1968.
