The discus throw (), also known as disc throw, is a track and field event in which an athlete throws a heavy disk (mathematics), disc—called a discus—in an attempt to mark a farther distance than their competitors. The 6th World Championships in Athletics, under the auspices of the International Amateur Athletic Federation, were held at the Olympic Stadium, Athens, Greece between August 1 and August 10, 1997. In this event participated 1882 athletes from 198 participant nations. Athens used the successful organization of the World Championships the next month during the IOC Session in Lausanne during its campaign to host the 2004 Summer Olympics as proof positive of Athens' and Greece's ability and readiness to organize large-scale, international sporting events. The Brothers Znamensky Memorial (russian: Мемориал братьев Знаменских) is an annual track and field competition which is held at the Meteor Stadium in Zhukovsky, Russia. The event is held in memory of Seraphim and Georgy Znamensky, the 1930s Soviet champions in long-distance running who died in 1942 and 1946, respectively. It was established in 1949, and received an international status in 1958, as only Soviet (Russian) athletes competed in 1949–1950 and 1998, and there was a break in the event between 1950 and 1958. Each edition features memorial races over distances from 1500 metres to 10,000 metres. Olga Mikhailovna Chernyavskaya, née Davydova, formerly Burova (russian: Ольга Михайповна Чернявская; born 17 September 1963) is a Russian discus thrower. As Olga Burova, she won the gold medal at the 1993 World Championships. She also won European Championships silver in 1990, World Championship bronze in 1995, and is a three-time Olympian. Iryna Vasiliyevna Yatchenko ( be, Ірына Ятчанка, russian: Ирина Васильевна Ятченко; born 31 October 1965) is a Belarusian former discus thrower best known for winning two Olympic bronze medals at the 2000 Summer Olympics and 2004 Summer Olympics, although she was eventually stripped of the latter medal due to a doping offence. 1992 IAAF Grand Prix Final
The 1992 IAAF Grand Prix Final was the eighth edition of the season-ending competition for the IAAF Grand Prix track and field circuit, organised by the International Association of Athletics Federations. It was held on 4 September at the Stadio Olimpico di Torino in Turin, Italy. Kevin Young (400 metres hurdles) and Heike Drechsler (long jump) were the overall points winners of the tournament. A total of 17 athletics events were contested, nine for men and eight for women. The host stadium was not of a suitable size to safely host the men's hammer throw event, so this was instead contested separately in Brussels at the annual Memorial Van Damme meeting.
