Lapp Log House
The Lapp Log House, also known as the Hopper Log House, is an historic, American home that is located in East Whiteland Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania, East Whiteland Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. History and architectural features The original section of this historic building dates to circa 1800, and is a two-story, one-bay, log structure. The interior has an eight-foot, stone fireplace and gooseneck spiral staircase. A two-story frame addition was built during the 1800s, with an addition built in the 1900s and the former patio enclosed in 1976. The additions were created in a saltbox form. The house was restored in the 1940s. Also located on the property is a contributing stone Pennsylvania barn, Pennsylvania bank barn. East Whiteland Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania
East Whiteland Township is a township in Chester County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 10,650 at the 2010 census. Mailing addresses associated with East Whiteland include Malvern, Frazer, and a small area of Exton. History Founded in 1704, Whiteland Township was made up of what is today known as East and West Whiteland townships. The first European settlers were Welsh. The name Whiteland came from Whitford Garden in Flintshire, Wales. Whiteland Township was divided into two townships in 1765. Native Americans called the area "The Dark Valley" because of the numerous trees and undergrowth. During the American Revolution, Gen. George Washington and many of his troops camped at Malin Hall here. They were preparing for a September 16, 1777, encounter with British General William Howe. Saltbox
A saltbox house is a gable-roofed residential structure that is typically two stories in the front and one in the rear. It is a traditional New England style of home, originally timber framed, which takes its name from its resemblance to a wooden lidded box in which salt was once kept. The structure's unequal sides and long, low rear roofline are its most distinctive features. A flat front and central chimney are also recognizable traits. Origins The saltbox originated in New England and is an example of American colonial architecture. Its shape evolved organically as an economical way to enlarge a house by adding a shed to a home's rear. Original hand-riven oak clapboards are still in place on some of the earliest New England saltboxes, such as the Comfort Starr House and Ephraim Hawley House.
