Lansdale Ghiselin Sasscer, Jr.
Lansdale Ghiselin Sasscer Jr. (September 25, 1926 – April 13, 2020) was a member of the Maryland House of Delegates, serving from 1955 to 1963. He was the son of former President of the Maryland Senate and member of the United States House of Representatives for seven terms from 1939–1953, Lansdale Sasscer During World War II Sasscer served in the United States Coast Guard. After the war he entered law school, his first year of law school in an accelerated postwar program at the University of Virginia, and finishing his degree at the University of Maryland at Baltimore. he decided to run for the House of Delegates representing Prince George's County, Maryland in 1954 at the age of 28 as a Democrat. In 1962, he ran for the Maryland State Senate and lost. Upper Marlboro, Maryland
Upper Marlboro, officially the Town of Upper Marlboro, is the seat of Prince George's County, Maryland. Aso of the 2020 census, the population was 652. although Greater Upper Marlboro is many times larger. Etymology Upper Marlboro was established in 1706 as "Marlborough Town", after John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough. In 1744, the town was renamed to "Upper Marlborough". In the late 19th century, the town's name changed from Upper Marlborough to Upper Marlboro. The name change is linked to a postal clerk who felt that the last three letters, "ugh", did not properly fit on the rubber stamps being used at the time. By 1893, postal guides were referring to the town as Upper Marlboro and the name stuck, despite a proposed ballot to have it changed back in 1968. Lansdale Sasscer
Lansdale Ghiselin Sasscer (September 30, 1893 – November 5, 1964) represented the fifth district of the state of Maryland in the United States House of Representatives for seven terms from 1939 to 1953. Sasscer was born in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, and graduated from Dickinson School of Law in Carlisle, Pennsylvania in 1914. He was admitted to the bar the same year and commenced practice in Upper Marlboro. During World War I, he served from 1917 to 1919, being overseas for thirteen months as a first lieutenant in the Fifty-ninth Artillery of the United States Army. After the War, Sasscer resumed the practice of law, and served as a member of the Maryland State Senate from 1922 to 1938, serving as President of the Senate in 1935 and 1937. He was delegate to the 1924 and 1936 Democratic National Conventions, and vice chairman of the committee on reorganization of the State government in 1939.
