Lanny Smoot
Lanny Smoot (born December 13, 1955) is an American electrical engineer, inventor, scientist, and theatrical technology creator. With over 100 patents, he is The Walt Disney Company, Disney's most prolific inventor and one of the most prolific Black inventors in American history. Throughout his career he has worked to inspire young people, especially Black youth, towards Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, STEM. Biography Lanny was born in Brooklyn, NY, USA, and later attended Brooklyn Technical High School. He attended Columbia University, supported by a Bell Labs Engineering Scholarship and received his Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering. He then started work at Bell Communications Research (Bellcore), and while working at Bell (later Telcordia), he also completed his Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering from Columbia. Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage
Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage is an attraction in the Tomorrowland area of Disneyland Park in Anaheim, California. It opened on June 11, 2007. Based on the characters and settings of the 2003 Disney·Pixar film, ''Finding Nemo'', it is a re-theming of the classic Submarine Voyage attraction that operated from 1959 to 1998. History The original Submarine Voyage, built in 1959 as part of the new Tomorrowland, was loosely based on the ''USS Nautilus'', the first nuclear-powered submarine, and its voyage to the North Pole in 1958. On July 29, 1998, it was announced that the ride would be closed on September 7, and that it would reopen with a new theme by 2003. On its final day of operation, Imagineer Tony Baxter told then-Disneyland president Paul Pressler, "This is one of the worst days of my life." The Themed Entertainment Association (TEA) is an international non-profit association that represents creators, developers, designers and producers of themed entertainment. It is also noted for its THEA Awards, which were founded in 1995 and are distributed annually in a range of themed entertainment categories. Founding The TEA was founded in 1991 by Monty Lunde, a former special effects designer for Disney who had gone on to start the special effects company Technifex with his business partner Rock Hall. The TEA mission, as stated in its bylaws, is to facilitate dialogue and communication among its members, to stimulate knowledge and professional growth, and to expand the size, diversity and awareness of the themed entertainment industry.
