Lankadipa (Ceylon)
''Lankadeepa'' was a Sinhala language daily newspaper in Ceylon published by Times of Ceylon Limited (TOCL). It was founded on 29 October 1947 and was published from Colombo. Initially an evening paper, it became a morning daily on 1 May 1949. In 1966 it had an average net sales of 56,241. It had an average circulation of 57,769 in 1970, 33,751 in 1973 and 14,000 in 1976. TOCL was nationalised by the Sri Lankan government in August 1977. The state-run TOCL faced financial and labour problems and on 31 January 1985 it and its various publications closed down. Ranjith Wijewardena, chairman of Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited (ANCL) before it was nationalised in July 1973, bought the trade names and library of the TOCL publications in 1986. Wijewardena's company, Wijeya Newspapers, subsequently started various newspapers using the names of former TOCL publications. Wijeya Newspapers Limited (WNL) is a Sri Lankan media company which publishes a number of national newspapers and magazines. Formerly known as Wijeya Publications Limited, WNL was founded in 1979 by Ranjith Wijewardene, son of media mogul D. R. Wijewardena. Ranjith Wijewardene had been chairman of Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited before it was taken over by the government in July 1973. Ranjith Wijewardene bought the trade names and library of the Times of Ceylon Limited (TOCL) group after it closed down in January 1985. He subsequently started various newspapers using the names of former TOCL publications: Irida Lankadeepa (1986), ''Sunday Times'' (1987), ''Lankadeepa'' (1991) and ''Midweek Mirror'' (1995). Lankadeepa ( si, ලංකාදීප) is a daily Sri Lankan Sinhala language newspaper which is owned by Wijeya Newspapers. They were established in 1991. The Chairman of the organisation is Ranjith Wijewardene, the son of D. R. Wijewardena. The newspaper's coverage includes politics, sports, entertainment and military. The weekend newspaper, named ''Irida Lankadeepa'', is published on Sundays. Irida Lankadeepa won the SLIM-Nielsen People's Awards in 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2010 as Sri Lanka's most popular weekend newspaper.
