Langside
Langside is a district in the Scottish city of Glasgow. It is situated south of the River Clyde, and lies east of Shawlands, south of Queens Park, west of Cathcart and north of Newlands. The district is residential and primarily middle-class, and has become an increasingly fashionable address in recent years. The housing stock is mainly of the Victorian tenement type, along with some townhouses of the same period. History In 1568 the area was the site of the Battle of Langside, the last battle fought by the forces of Mary, Queen of Scots, prior to her exile and death in England. The original village of Langside was based around what is now Algie Street, named after Glasgow Merchant Matthew Algie, near the Battlefield Monument. There were two mills nearby on the White Cart, a meal mill and a paper mill which dated back to the 17th century. Battle Of Langside
The Battle of Langside was fought on 13 May 1568 between forces loyal to Mary, Queen of Scots, and forces acting in the name of her infant son James VI. Mary’s short period of personal rule ended in 1567 in recrimination, intrigue, and disaster when, after her capture at Carberry Hill, she was forced to abdicate in favour of James VI. Mary was imprisoned in Lochleven Castle, while her Protestant half-brother, James Stewart, Earl of Moray, was appointed Regent on behalf of his nephew. In early May 1568 Mary escaped, heading west to the country of the Hamiltons, high among her remaining supporters, and the safety of Dumbarton Castle with the determination to restore her rights as queen. Mary was defeated and went into exile and captivity in England. The battle is generally considered the start of the Marian civil war. Langside (ward)
Langside (Ward 7) is one of the 23 wards of Glasgow City Council. On its creation in 2007 and in 2012 it returned three council members, using the single transferable vote system. For the 2017 Glasgow City Council election, the boundaries were changed, the ward increased in size and returned four members. Boundaries The ward is situated on the south side of Glasgow. As well as Langside itself, it also includes Battlefield, Mount Florida (including Hampden Park and the New Victoria Hospital), the northern parts of King's Park and Cathcart and the eastern part of Shawlands. The 2017 expansion took in Toryglen from the Southside Central ward and a few streets on the north side of the Cathcart Circle Line railway which had previously been in Newlands/Auldburn when the boundary was the White Cart Water. Shawlands
Shawlands () is a Southside suburb of Glasgow, Scotland, located two miles south of the River Clyde. The area, considered the "Heart of the Southside", is known for its independent restaurants and cafés, art scene, public parks, period terraces, and red and blond sandstone tenements. Battlefield, Glasgow
Battlefield is a district in the Scottish city of Glasgow. It is situated south of the River Clyde. The area takes its name from the Battle of Langside of 1568 in which Mary, Queen of Scots' army was defeated by forces acting in the name of her infant son, James VI. A highly decorative monument, designed by Alexander Skirving in 1887, now stands adjacent to Queen's Park commemorating the 320th anniversary of her defeat. Housing consists mainly of three and four-storey Victorian and Edwardian tenements, although there are also numerous townhouses from the same era, and some modern properties. Battlefield was formerly a centre of Glasgow's Jewish community, although most have now moved further south to Giffnock and Newton Mearns, or further afield to Manchester or Israel. Susan Aitken
Susan Aitken (born November 1971) is a Scottish politician who has served as Leader of Glasgow City Council since 2017. A member of the Scottish National Party, she has been the leader of the SNP group on the council since 2014 and a councillor for the Langside ward since 2012. Early life Aitken was born in Biggar, Lanarkshire in November 1971 to Glaswegian parents. After attending Biggar High School, she studied English Literature at the University of Glasgow before completing a Masters Degree at the neighbouring University of Strathclyde. Queen's Park, Glasgow
Queen's Park (, ) is a park situated on the south side of the city of Glasgow, Scotland, between Strathbungo, Shawlands, Battlefield, Mount Florida, and Crosshill. The park lies about south of the city centre, and gives its name to a nearby railway station and several other local businesses and institutions, including the football team Queen's Park FC. History The lands of the park were part of the lands of Langside, belonging to the Maxwells of Pollok. During the 17th Century, the western part was sold to form Camphill Farm. This was sold again in 1799 to Glasgow manufacturer Robert Thomson who built , which still stands at the edge of the park grounds. His son purchased the adjacent Pathhead Farm in 1834, and the merged land was sold by grandson Neale Thomson to Glasgow Corporation in 1857 for the purpose of developing Glasgow's third park. Mount Florida
Mount Florida () is an area in the south-east of the city of Glasgow, Scotland. Origins The Glasgow district of Mount Florida originated on the "Lands of Mount Floridon", which were described in detail when offered for sale at auction on 21 September 1814. The notice in the city's ''The Herald (Glasgow), Herald'' newspaper described the estate as consisting of upwards of , with a mansion house containing two dwellings and gardens well stocked with fruit trees. Contemporary maps from the 1850s show the old house renamed as "Mount Florida, (Ruin)". It was entered from Prospecthill Road and consisted of two semi-detached dwellings and surrounding gardens. Much of the present suburb is situated in the area to the south of the old house. This ground was part of the "Lands of Clincart", which were put up for sale by auction on 28 June 1836. James Dornan
James Dornan (born 17 March 1953) is a Scottish National Party (SNP) politician who is Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) for Glasgow Cathcart. Early life James Dornan was raised in the Oatlands neighbourhood of southern Glasgow. In 1968 at the age of fifteen, Dornan was involved in a fighting incident with three other boys. One was severely injured, which led to Dornan briefly being charged with attempted murder. Dornan's charge was later reduced to common assault and he received a £15 fine and two years' probation. Dornan did not speak publicly about the incident for fifty-seven years until he was encouraged to come forward in 2025 by the social impact of the TV series ''Adolescence''. Dornan said; "When you're a young man, you do things without thinking of the repercussions and then the repercussions just expand, and everyone is caught up in it."
