Langa, Cape Town
Langa is a township in Cape Town, South Africa. Its name in Xhosa means "sun". The township was initially built in phases before being formally opened in 1927. It was developed as a result of South Africa's 1923 Urban Areas Act (more commonly known as the "pass laws"), which was designed to force Africans to move from their homes into segregated locations. Similar to Nyanga, Langa is one of the many areas in South Africa that were designated for Black Africans before the apartheid era. It is the oldest of such suburbs in Cape Town and was the location of much resistance to apartheid. Langa is also where several people were killed on 21 March 1960, the same day as the Sharpeville massacre, during the anti-pass campaign. On 21 March 2010, now 50 years later, a monument was unveiled by the government in remembrance of the people who died while on the protest march. The ''lehenga'', ''lehnga'' or ''langa'' (also known as a ''ghagra'' or ''gagra'', ''chaniya'', ''pavadai'', or ''lacha'') is a form of ankle-length skirt from the Indian subcontinent. Different patterns and styles of traditional embroidery are used to decorate the ''aiushi mazumder''. '' Gota patti'' embroidery is often used for festivals and weddings. The ''lehenga'' is sometimes worn as the lower portion of a '' gagra choli'' or ''langa voni''. ''Ghagra'' in Hindi (also ''Ghagro'' in Konknni), was also used to refer to the half slip or petticoat, a skirt worn as an undergarment below the sari. Thokozani Langa (born 9 February 1972) is a ''Maskandi'' musician from Mahlabathini, Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa. Langa signed with Bula Music in 2004 to release his third studio album '' I-Protection Order'' (2011). After receiving exposure on national radio and the traditional South African music program Ezodumo, he was nominated for SAMA for both his albums ''Ipeni Nephepha'' (2005) and ''Lishonil' Ilanga'' (2006), in the category of Best Maskandi Album and Best Mbaqanga Album respectively, alongside The Soul Brothers and Bhekumuzi Luthuli. Langa was engaged for some time in a musical rivalry with fellow Maskandi singer Bhekumuzi Luthuli. Mandla Langa
Mandla Langa (born 1950 in Stanger, Durban) is a South African poet, short-story writer, novelist, and cultural activist. He grew up in KwaMashu township of Kwazulu Natal. His novel ''The Lost Colours of the Chameleon'' won the 2009 Commonwealth Writers' Prize (Africa region). Langa enrolled for a degree in English and Philosophy at the University of Fort Hare, but was expelled in 1973 as a result of his involvement in the activities of the South African Student Organisation. In 1976, he went into exile and has lived in different countries of Southern Africa as well as in Hungary and the United Kingdom.
