Laneville, West Virginia
Laneville is an unincorporated community in Tucker County, West Virginia, United States. It lies on Red Creek (a tributary of Dry Fork of Cheat River) along the southern border of the Dolly Sods Wilderness in the Monongahela National Forest. History In 1902, the Parsons Pulp and Lumber Company installed a new band saw mill on Red Creek. The lumber boom town of Laneville soon sprang up around it with a population that peaked at over 300 people. The community was named for Martin Lane, one of four incorporators of the Dry Fork Lumber Company. In 1909, after a local vote, Laneville was incorporated for the purpose of prohibiting saloons. Monongahela National Forest
The Monongahela National Forest is a national forest located in the Allegheny Mountains of eastern West Virginia, USA. It protects over of federally managed land within a proclamation boundary that includes much of the Potomac Highlands Region and portions of 10 counties. The Monongahela National Forest includes some major landform features such as the Allegheny Front and the western portion of the Ridge-and-valley Appalachians. Within the forest boundaries lie some of the highest mountain peaks in the state, including the highest, Spruce Knob (4,863 ft). Spruce Knob is also the highest point in the Allegheny Mountains. Approximately 75 tree species are found in the forest. Almost all of the trees are a second growth forest, grown back after the land was heavily cutover around the start of the 20th century. The McClain Printing Company (MPC) is a printing company specializing in books of West Virginia history and lore. The company was incorporated in 1958 in Parsons, West Virginia as an outgrowth of the local weekly newspaper, the ''Parsons Advocate''. History In 1943, Ken and Faith Reynolds McClain had bought the ''Parsons Advocate'' which had been founded in 1896. Mr. McClain was approached around 1957 by West Virginia University professors who feared that early local West Virginia histories would be lost if they were not reprinted. The ''Parsons Advocate'' is a newspaper serving Parsons and surrounding Tucker County in the U.S. state of West Virginia. Published weekly, it has a circulation of 3,033 and is owned by Mountain Media. The paper began life as the Parsons ''City Advocate'', a Republican weekly founded in 1896. From 1896 to 1903, future governor William Gustavus Conley was a co-owner of the paper. The title was shortened to the Parsons ''Advocate'' in 1901. In 1907, Parsons resident David Wallace Thurston became editor of the ''Advocate'', and on July 1, 1913, he leased the plant and business, buying it in full in November 1919. Dolly Sods Wilderness
The Dolly Sods Wilderness – originally simply Dolly Sods – is a U.S. Wilderness Area in the Allegheny Mountains of eastern West Virginia, US, and is part of the Monongahela National Forest (MNF) of the U.S. Forest Service (USFS). Dolly Sods is a rocky, high-altitude plateau with sweeping vistas and lifeforms normally found much farther north in Canada. To the north, the distinctive landscape of "the Sods" is characterized by stunted ("flagged") trees, wind-carved boulders, heath barrens, grassy meadows created in the last century by logging and fires, and sphagnum bogs that are much older.
