Lander College Old Main Building
Lander College Old Main Building is a historic academic building located on the campus of Lander University at Greenwood, Greenwood County, South Carolina. It is a large masonry building, composed of three distinct sections with a blending of elements of the Romanesque Revival and Georgian Revival styles. Two of the sections, Greenwood Hall and Laura Lander Hall, were built in 1903-04; Willson Hall was added in 1911. It is the earliest Lander College building. The tower serves as a focal point for the building and defines its character as a school building. Greenwood is a city in and the county seat of Greenwood County, South Carolina, United States. The population in the 2020 United States Census was 22,545 down from 23,222 at the 2010 census. The city is home to Lander University. Geography and Climate Greenwood is located slightly northwest of the center of Greenwood County. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of , of which are land and , or 0.72%, are water. U.S. Routes 25, 178 and 221 pass through the eastern side of the city, bypassing the downtown area. US 25 leads north to Greenville and south to Augusta, Georgia, US 178 leads northwest to Anderson and southeast to Saluda, and US 221 leads northeast to Laurens and southwest to McCormick. Lander University
Lander University is a public university in Greenwood, South Carolina. Campus and housing Lander University is located approximately one half-mile from uptown Greenwood, South Carolina. The main campus sits on 190 acres of land, though this does not include its many off-campus locations. Lander University has ten residence halls. Residence halls include Bearcat Village, Brookside, Centennial Hall, Chipley Hall, Lide Apartments, McGhee Court, New Hall, Thomason, University Place, and Williamston. In July 2021, Lander announced that the state legislature has appropriated new funding for the University, which includes money that will be used to construct a nursing building on Lander's campus in Greenwood. Romanesque Revival (or Neo-Romanesque) is a style of building employed beginning in the mid-19th century inspired by the 11th- and 12th-century Romanesque architecture. Unlike the historic Romanesque style, Romanesque Revival buildings tended to feature more simplified arches and windows than their historic counterparts. An early variety of Romanesque Revival style known as Rundbogenstil ("Round-arched style") was popular in German lands and in the German diaspora beginning in the 1830s.
