Land Van Altena
The Land of Altena ( nl, Land van Altena) is a historical region and former fiefdom of the Lords of Altena, historically part of the County of Holland, but since 1815 located in the Dutch province of North Brabant. The Land of Altena lies on a river island in the estuary of the rivers Rhine and Meuse. It is enclosed by the rivers Boven Merwede (north), Afgedamde Maas (east) and Oude Maasje/Bergse Maas (south) and by the regions De Biesbosch (west) and the (former) Land of Heusden (southeast). It contains the former municipalities of Werkendam (the largest town of the island), and Woudrichem (the historical centre of the island and whose village Almkerk contains the site of the former castle of Altena). Since 1904 it is united with the Land of Heusden (only the part above the Bergse Maas) as the '' Land of Heusden and Altena''. Werkendam
Werkendam () is a town and a former municipality in the southern Netherlands. The municipality, part of Land van Heusden en Altena, contained a large part of De Biesbosch area as is located in the province of North Brabant. On January 1sth 2019 it joined Woudrichem and Aalburg in the new municipality of Altena. The Land of Heusden and Altena ( nl, Land van Heusden en Altena) is a region located in the Dutch province of North Brabant. In 1904 it consisted of the historical regions ''Land van Altena'' and '' Land van Heusden'' (only the part above the Bergse Maas). Historically this region has been a part of North Brabant since 1815. During the Dutch Republic it belonged to Holland. It resembles comparable landscapes in the latter one, like e.g. the Alblasserwaard, which is situated just north of the region. Hendrikus "Hendrik" Colijn (22 June 1869 – 18 September 1944) was a Dutch politician of the Anti-Revolutionary Party (ARP; now defunct and merged into the Christian Democratic Appeal or CDA). He served as Prime Minister of the Netherlands from 4 August 1925 until 8 March 1926, and from 26 May 1933 until 10 August 1939. Early life He was born on 22 June 1869 in the Haarlemmermeer to Antonie Colijn and Anna Verkuijl, who had migrated to the newly created Haarlemmermeer polder from the Land of Heusden and Altena for religious reasons. Almkerk
Almkerk is a village in the municipality of Altena, North Brabant, Altena, in the Netherlands. It is located about 7 km south of Gorinchem. History The village was first mentioned in 1292 as Almekercke, and means "church on the Alm river". The Alm used to be a distributary of the Meuse. The mouth of river had been dammed before 1230 in Giessen, Netherlands, Giessen. Almkerk developed on the river bank of the Alm. The Altena Castle (Almkerk), Altena Castle was located east of the village. The ''polder'' mill Oude Doornse Molen was built around 1700. The wind mill was in service until 1965. In 1940 and 1944, the ''polder'' was inundated by the Dutch and German armies respectively, and Oude Doornse Molen later removed the water again. The mill also removed the water after the North Sea flood of 1953. Almkerk was home to 320 people in 1840. In 1879, Almkerk absorbed the former municipality of Emmikhoven. Woudrichem (; Brabantian: ''Woerkum'') is a city and former municipality in the province of North Brabant in the Netherlands. History The city of Woudrichem was granted city rights in 1356. Geography The municipality is located at in the north of North Brabant just south of the center of the Netherlands. It is part of the region of Land van Heusden en Altena. The city of Woudrichem is the largest settlement in the municipality. It is situated on the southbank of where the rivers Waal and Afgedamde Maas join to form the Boven Merwede.
