Louise Lamphere
Louise Lamphere (born 1940) is an American anthropologist who has been distinguished professor of anthropology at the University of New Mexico since 2001. She was a faculty member at UNM from 1976–1979 and again from 1986–2009, when she became a professor emerita. Lamphere served as president of the American Anthropological Association from 1999 to 2001. Career Lamphere received her B.A. and M.A. from Stanford University in 1962 and 1966 and her Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1968. She has published extensively throughout her career on subjects as diverse as the Navajo and their medicinal practices and de-industrialisation and urban anthropology; nonetheless she is possibly best known for her work on feminist anthropology and gender issues. In 1977, Lamphere became an associate of the Women's Institute for Freedom of the Press (WIFP). Lamphere Public Schools
Lamphere Public Schools is a public school district in Madison Heights, Michigan. As of the 2019-2020 school year, the district served 2,426 students in nine schools. History The first Lamphere School was built in 1928 to serve kindergarten through 12th grades; the school still stands as Hiller Elementary. The school made headlines in the final years of the Great Depression when, in 1937, it refused to accept students who were then living in a tent city. The board claimed that most of the tent city residents were from other areas, that there was no room, teachers or money to provide for the tent city children's education. The Lamphere School would be expanded in 1945 with the addition of four new rooms. Because of the relocation of many Detroiters to the suburbs, Lamphere went on a half-day schedule in order to ease overcrowding in 1955, the year Madison Heights incorporated as a city.
