Lamond-Riggs Neighborhood Library
The Lamond-Riggs/Lillian J. Huff Neighborhood Library is a branch of the District of Columbia Public Library in the Queens Chapel neighborhood of Washington, D.C. It is located at 5401 South Dakota Avenue NE. Residents had requested a library for the area as early as 1957; the current building opened in 1983 at a cost of $2 million. In the late 2010s, the city approved a $20 million project to rebuild the library, designed by Hammel, Green and Abrahamson. Razing of the building began on January 4, 2021, and the library reopened on June 27, 2022. The library was renamed the Lamond-Riggs/Lillian J. District Of Columbia Public Library
The District of Columbia Public Library (DCPL) is the public library system for the District of Columbia, in the United States. The system includes 26 individual libraries including Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library (the DCPL's central library). History The library was founded in 1896 by an act of Congress after a lobbying effort by Theodore W. Noyes, editor of the ''Washington Evening Star'' newspaper. Noyes served on the library's board of trustees for 50 years. The first library branch was located in a home at 1326 New York Avenue NW, with a collection of 15,000 donated books and an appropriation of $6,720 for its maintenance. This was replaced by a main library, donated by Andrew Carnegie, built at Mount Vernon Square, which now houses the Historical Society of Washington, D.C. and an Apple Store. Queens Chapel is a mostly residential neighborhood with commercial elements located in Ward 5 of Northeast Washington, D.C. Its namesake is the Queens Family Chapel, the first Catholic parish in DC. It burned to the ground multiple times, the last fire occurring during the Battle of Bladensburg. It was later rebuilt as St Francis de Sales Church in 1906. Hammel, Green And Abrahamson
Hammel, Green and Abrahamson (HGA) is an architecture, engineering, and planning firm that originated in Minnesota. It was founded in 1953 by Minnesotans Dick Hammel and Curt Green (Bruce Abrahamson joined in shortly thereafter). All three of HGA's founders were schooled in the Bauhaus tradition, which stressed a collaborative and inter-disciplinary approach to Modernism. They began their work designing K-12 school buildings. Riggs Park, also known as ''"Lamond Riggs"'', is a residential neighborhood in Ward 4 of Northeast Washington, D.C. Riggs Park is contained between Eastern Avenue N.E. to the east, Riggs Road N.E. to the south, North Capitol Street N.W. to the north and west, and the Blair Road Community Garden to the north. Riggs Park is adjacent to the neighborhoods of Queens Chapel, North Michigan Park, and Fort Totten, located in Ward 5 of Northeast Washington D.C.
